Honestly, we live on less than 15 euros per day, but don't have to exist on cheap Mexican food and place out TP in a stinky bucket. I don't mind Mexico or the Mexican people, but hands down.... The eastern Med is the spot. Much cheaper, thousands of free well-sheltered anchorages and far better food.
Im glad to hear the med is affordable. But when we were in Mexico in May the food was pretty awesome. Fresh food every where and everything but restaurants in the tourist areas was cheap.
Ok, the snacks on the Santa Rosalia ferry were pretty bad. But that was the worst.
Now the bathroom thing....I think.while we were there we were on a tour of Mexicos worst bathrooms. TP in a bucket? What tp? Some of what we saw reminded me of "the worst toilet in Britan" from Trainspotting. Thankfully these we not anywhere food was sold or prepared.

TP is toilet paper and everywhere we've been in Mx and Central America you don't put it in the toilet, you put it in the trash. It's so relaxing to sit there and stare into a waste bucket full of **** paper.

$1 = 19 Peso's?

Just the side of Mexico that is accesable to me is not the side you want to go to from my understanding.
Oh, well

yep...I had some of the best $0.55 Carne de Reys tamales in Tijuana yesterday I think in my entire life while waiting in the border line to cross back into San Diego. Add in a real cane sugar coke and for less than $2USD I was stuffed, fat and happy! That's $2...you can't get nothing in the States that good for $2!

so, its entirely possible to retire at 1k-1500 dollars per month, This is great incredible news and SaltyMonkey is delighted there is still HOPE and possible for an escape hatch to a LIVE outside of this rocketship crap of wor workw ork.

On the other hand, its quite possible to die from food poisoning.

You got that right Al. Food is cheap and fantastic. And did I mention..... no communal bucket of stinkin' TP in the restrooms to wreck the dining experience.

Absolutely...us cheapos have been singing this tune for a long time, but no one wants to listen...or could it be they know the tune, but are too afraid to sing-along?

As for Food poisoning..the worst case I have had in my life was from the Eggs Benedict at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco at $400/nt (oh the days of Corporate expense accounts...). That one earned me a two night hospital stay, but on the bright side, I did lose about 10lbs.

Yikes 3rd day. You are like the 3rd person that told me the same Benedict story from different hotels and restaurants.

Re: Mexico cruising $1k/mo

Hey, hey group!
I've enjoyed all of the responses.

I've been enjoying being disconnected while cruising. Gotta love limited to no cell service sometimes, awww the peace.

Sharing of local prices certainly helps one budget. I find Yelp is a great tool for that, btw. Who knew searching for the most gorgeous looking photo of a fish taco for a buck would be such a great past time, ha!

I hang out with lots of younger newbies here in California, who like so many, are hoping to take a sabbatical from their jobs and go south. I'll keep sharing this great info, so please keep it coming.

Now to Kenomac. You say 15euros/day. Your on a very large, high price point (stunning might I add) vessel. Surely, that number is excluding your ongoing maintenance, insurance, blah blah blah. For someone who loves the Med and yes would prefer it to MX. If you don't mind sharing a range, how's your total monthly budget looking vs when you were in MX?

I fantasize about doing some canal cruising one day. I just can't think of a better way to enjoy Europe's countryside.
