Re: Older boats

This guy has sailed his boat damn near around the world. It's a Bristol 27 also but I believe it's a 1966.

So 53 years old. I'm amazed how well that Catalina sail fits. Is it for a 270?

Re: Older boats

Similar story here. Boat 40 y.o.

Being designed, built and sailed by Swedes she spent the first 25 years of her life mostly on dry (sailing season in Sweden is June-September).

She was, I dare say, pretty good back in 2004. Almost like new.

FFWD 15 years and 50k miles the boat is "somewhat less perfect". I am sure I can see the difference. 15 years and 50k miles I am somewhat less perfect, too.

The whole difference being last 15 years she spent in the water, sailed. There is no cure for age.

If old boats were that great, their prices would not be a minute % of the price of an equivalent new unit!

Cheers,
b.

Older boats

Oh depends on the builder. The previous owners. The previous yards.

Mine was built 48 years ago by the Mass yard in Breskens NL. I’m the 4th owner. She has her third engine, second rig, who knows what generation of electronics second steering system on its second refresh, at least third compass, at least second and likely more refrigeration system, and who knows what else has been replaced.
Oh yeah at least second centerboard pendant and second centerboard pin.

The key old or new is it all works, can be accessed for maintenance or repair, and has been kept up.

And it’s all solid and strong enough for the purpose.

Re: Older boats

My boat, Lagom, is 54 years old and going strong. Like any boat it breaks or wears out a few things. Hardly a full time job keeping her going though.

Re: Older boats

I have a 1979, 1977 and a 1969 and the fiberglass hulls are thick and have never given my any problems.
