Re: Private purchase of sailing boat

Definitely a lot of work and risk for this boat. I think I would look for something else. I bought a boat that was USCG documented and the paperwork showed a lien. The owner never had it updated after the loan was paid, so I had to do all of the legwork to get it fixed. The bank he used had been bought out about four times since the loan was satisfied...it was a bit of a nightmare.

And [even if Montanan will find it a bit heavy :-)] its corollary:

There's a simple proverb that is generally true: "If a deal seems to be too good to be true, it probably is."

Re: Private purchase of sailing boat

The problem with a sailboat is that people often get " smitten" by some or other bug and can see nothing else but....
On the other hand, friends, family, etc looking at the same boat, are shaking their heads, wringing their hands and generally seeing nothing but catastrophe at the end of the line.

It reminds me of bygone years when I was "smitten" by some or other girl. Certain brain cells in my head cease to work and function and blinders are formed over my eyes. Yet, friends, seeing the picture more clearly, are quick to point out the dangers and pitfalls should I chose to proceed with my dulled brain and waning eyesight.

Sad as I am to admit it, I chose to blithely ignore their admonitions, for which I paid dearly in the coming weeks.

Some people, simply have to learn things the hard way.
