Washington State purchase with out-of-state residence

I have tried to read up on local tax laws on the various dot-gov sites but am unable to come up with an answer.

Today we purchased a used boat in Washington State - we are Oregon residents and we are moving the boat to Oregon within the next 4 months. The question is; do or don't we pay sales and/or use tax in Washington State and can we stay there for a (limited) time before we move the boat to Oregon. At present the boat is USCG documented and has a WA state registration.

I would just go ahead and register it in Oregon and pay the taxes. Then if you do stay here longer then 60 days you could apply for a permit.

If you’ll be on Washington waters for more than 60 days, you must apply for a permit on or before the 60th day of your visit.

To apply for a permit, visit any vehicle/boat licensing office and bring along:
Your unexpired state boat registration.
Identification from your state.
Or, before the 60 days, you could take it up into Canada for a day, logging in, and then back into the US, logging in. Good for another 60 days.

Re: Washington State purchase with out-of-state residence

As far as I know, Oregon residents are exempt from WA sales/use tax. Several years ago I lived in OR and bought a used RV in WA. I kept the RV in WA for 5-6 months before taling it to OR. I titled it in OR immediately but could not register it until I drove it home. No tax issues.

I currently live in WA quite near the OR state line. When visiting the local WalMart or Home Depot you are asked for my residency at the check out. If you are an OR resident they dont charge sales tax.

Re: Washington State purchase with out-of-state residence

from their site:
Visiting Washington State

Visits of 60 days or less

You don’t need a permit to be on Washington waters for up to 60 days, as long as your boat meets one of the following requirements:
  • It is currently registered in another state.
  • It has a current U.S. Coast Guard Documentation Paper.
Visits longer than 60 days

If you’ll be on Washington waters for more than 60 days, you must apply for a permit on or before the 60th day of your visit.
To apply for a permit, visit any vehicle/boat licensing office and bring along:
  • Your unexpired state boat registration.
  • Identification from your state.
You may renew the permit once for an additional 60 days. When the renewed permit expires, you must either register your boat in Washington State or remove your boat from Washington waters.

You ought to get the permit and so some cruising this summer before moving!!!

I'll second the cruising the San Juans for a month or two. You will truly enjoy that area and it is not that far from the San Juans to Victoria, BC or Vancouver, BC. Those are 2 truely excellent areas for sailboat cruising. Enjoy as the trip down WA coast will be a great experience..

Congratulations on your new boat. I live in Vancouver, WA and my boat is in Blaine. I don't think you need to pay Washington taxes. I don't even think the permit is that big of a deal. The emphasis has been on those Washington residents that choose to title in Oregon to beat Washington State taxes.

I just spoke with our County Auditor. Her office is responsible for vehicle titling, registration and sales tax collection on vehicle transactions in our county. She confirmed that you will not have a sales tax lability and as long as you comply with Oregons titling requirements you should have no trouble to that end.
