34 foot Jim brown trimaran, at California harbor to be destroyed

I don't know where to post this, or if anyone is even interested.

It is a 34 foot Jim brown
Manta design. launched in 1969. but has been modified with a larger
cabin added on. most of the original structure remains underneath, so
restoring to original would be doable. there are many issues,
the most serious, rot in the main beam end, at the junction to the
port float.

The boat was released to the harbor for destruction. I know it needs serious work. It's still floating as of yesterday. I have no idea what would be entailed in attempting to purchase or take ownership, or if it would even be possible.

Welcome aboard Greenthumbelina. I can appreciate wanting to see a good old boat survive, but do you know if it is even for sale? Would the harbor sell it? I suspect not. And where are you, is that Santa Cruz?

Yes, Santa Cruz. I have no idea if it's possible to get it from them or not. In a perfect world, if someone wanted it, they would be happy to avoid the expense of dealing with it... but who knows the technicalities.

Unless someone can haul that out to a yard, there is likely no harbor in CA that would accept it. They already have too many derelict boats as it is. That's presuming it can even be re-titled. If it is an owner abandoned boat that was signed over to the state, I don't think it can be sold.

that's a 50 year old wood boat...enough said...probably hasn't seen a lick of maintenance in years...remember this in a re-build effort....you first have to remove all the old stuff, before you can put the new stuff on....it's like building a boat twice

If there is someone out there you really don't like or with whom you wish to even an old score - obtain a boat like that and give it to them!

Agree. Santa Cruz is a municipal harbor and marina, and once a city decides to dispose of just about anything, it's finished. With a main beam rotted, it's probably been deemed unsafe for navigation. I personally wouldn't want to try to take that boat out of the harbor, even under tow.

These old Jim Brown and Piver trimarans are a throw back to the 70's..most all were homebuilt.....so the build quality would be unknown...looking at the photo's, it's clear this boat has fallen on hard times....might be some salvage value in the mast, etc, but besides that, it's a junker...

1) Plywood. the worst kind of rot.
2) I'll bet it has been stripped of anything with the slightest value.
3) Impossible to remove in Santa Cruz now because of the size and the roads and lines now.
4) No slips available in the lower harbor for 20 years, I think.
5) Santa Cruz has strict rules about working on boats in the harbor.
