Your post resonated the most, having experienced multiple concussions due to said ballcaps. Mostly cabin protrusions, but once by the boom.

Yet, I continue to wear them.

Re: A Cap for Yachting

A hat for sailing needs to have a chin strap or you won't have it long. It also should not have a long overhang in the front that restricts looking up at the sails or the boom you are about to bang head 'cause you can't see it with a wide brim/bill.

My favorite is the Viet Nam era 'boony hat'. They have a chin strap and a relatively narrow brim. The brim is wide enough to protect your ears and neck from sun but not so wide to seriously block your forward vision. I cut a round piece of packing foam, punch holes in it for ventilation and stuff it in the top of the hat. The thin foam works amazingly to keep the shock of bumping something from drawing blood or a headache. Oh, they are cheap at surplus stores and come in a variety of colors from OD to Navy Blue.

Resonating point #2.

The boatyard that hauled my boat last month gave me a logo'd baseball type cap upon splashing & I lost it on the very 1st sail thereafter.
Wear it well, mighty Poseidon!

I used to take it as an opportunity to practice MOB skills.
Rarely if ever list a hat, never lost a person.

You may be able to find a deal on that cap that includes a special jacket with neon "New Boater" lettering on the back.

I do that too, except in 2 to 3m swells, a crew heaving-ho breakfast over the lifelines, and two fishing lines trolling astern for big tuna...which is exactly how I lost my last one.

Of course:

1840 (Dana, Before the Mast) We had on oil cloth suits and southwester caps

1845 (Benjamin Disraeli, Sybil or The Two Nations - a novel about the living conditions of the down-trodden in class-ridden England under Victoria Regina) shaking the wet off an oilskin hat known by the name of a ‘south-wester’

Zing! Reminds me of the hat Rodney Dangerfield was wearing on his yacht in the movie Caddyshack. "Hey, you scratched my anchor!"

Look, dude's just into hats. Ok? I've seen worse obsessions. Who's he hurting?

PS. I do not wear hats, so I am an objective observer.

Re: A Cap for Yachting

Does the attached picture help Y'All in envisioning what Our colleagues are referring to as a Sou'Wester ?? Actually, I refer to Mine as a Sou'Easter 'cuz I am a Skipper at Annapolis, US Naval Academy instructing Midshipmen in Offshore Sailing. MD is in the SE of US, hence the name. FYI, I take a lot of sardonic grief from fellow sailors about My Gorton look. That is until it rains. and they are visually impaired by mini-waterfalls running off of the bills of their baseball hats, or cold rain running down their necks & backs. Meanwhile. I can SEE and am DRY !! Well worth tolerating a few sarcastic comments. Jus' sayin', Fair Winds...... MRF

Nice hat, sir!
Also, it keeps your glasses dry without windshield wipers...hmm.

Personally I use a Tilley hat under the hood of a foul weather jacket.
I don't have a picture but I look like something out of the Handmaid's Tale!

Now that is a HAT! will you agree that if you only made one change... and that is.. to put a stiff peak in the front... that you might have “the perfect hat”? I don’t meannabpeak... just a stood brim in the front

Re: A Cap for Yachting

SO, FYI, The brim is reinforced and semi-stiff which allows it to be pulled down for the effect of which You speak. It also has a chin strap and ear flaps which are tucked up into hat. I was inside, afterall, when the picture was taken and needn't display ALL of its merits. SuW, the aforementioned info precludes that wipers are not needed. I too have a Tilley's hat which has lasted for years. That's a good choice. Keep it affixed to Your noggin lest it blows overboard. If it does, 'cuz they are costly. I'm sure some passing boaters will be diving into the brink to rescue it,............................and claim salvage rights to keep for themselves. Jus' sayin'. It IS Maritime Law afterall. THANX for Y'All's insightful Posts. Fair Winds...... MRF
