Great to hear, hopefully we can get some close racing
This competition has sofar been both exhilarating and pitiful in its fragility

Meanwhile TNZ has come out with obviously new foils, longer, thinner, flatter. You have to assume that they believe that this new set is faster than the previous ones, but we won't know until March. Whew!

My hat is off to all the sailing media and commentators trying to find some copy to talk about, over such a long protracted period of time with so few challengers

yep, I think the American boat is back in the game again....sporting a few mods this time, plus a cute bandaid logo....I thought that was a cool touch....who knows, they may surprise us all.....

Somewhat exciting 30 second video showing just how dynamic these boats are.

It was quite puffy out on the water yesterday.

well, it's do or die day for American Patriot...but they have come from behind before....2013....

Seeing Patriot out of the water, I'm wondering about that pencil thin rudder and foil..it gets thinner as it gets deeper...wouldn't be that hard to stall it out......I'm curious to know their thinking behind that...

LR certainly had their ducks in a row....certainly has been the best performance I've seen from them....

American Patriot appears to have the edge in speed.....but Spithill drilled them twice in a row at the start...pathetic starts by American Patriot...I woulda thunk that Dean Barker was too savvy to be caught flat-footed like that......

Ah well......let's see what tomorrow brings....

Team American Magic didn't even exist in 2013... So there is no way they could have come from behind in San Francisco (that was Oracle Team USA).

It's not the rudder itself that is stalling/ventilating in these instances, so the pencil thin dimension you see is not relevant in relation to that.

It's the rudder t-foil that is stalling, and losing lift, which is why you see the stern sink.

The reason why the rudder is much thinner as is get's deeper is that when the boat is flying it's going faster, and at faster speeds less rudder is needed for control.

I don't really agree with that in terms of Friday's race. The 'top speed' that you might be referring to is really a red herring as it is only momentarily during the bear away at the top mark and doesn't really mean much as far as the overall race is concerned.

On Friday Patriot was in general a similar speed, but seemed to be lower upwind so that means more distance sailed.

Best to look at the stats shown at the end of the racing, which shows the averages upwind, downwind, distance sailed, etc.

Well, AM had a better start in race 3 but LR has got the lead now around the first mark.

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

LR lead(time) over AM at the gates.
Gate 1 0:13
Gate 2 0:22
Gate 3 0:41
Gate 4 0:20
Gate 5 0:41
Gate 6 0:35 - Finish

AM got a better start but LR had the superior position and used it to good effect to gain the lead and hold it for the duration.

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

AM didn't get a better start. They were not ahead, and they were far to leeward so had no control over Prada either. That's not beneficial in a match race, especially with a short boundary where don't have room to extend if you think you are faster.

And Terry Hutchinson confirmed it - that was plan B, so they were on the back foot immediately.

Speeds look similar, but LR look to be able to sail higher, as they did yesterday too.

AM could take a win if they put it all together, win the start, and make no mistakes.

I was talking about their start in comparison to yesterday's effort. It was definitely better, just still not better than LR who had the better position as I said.

Sadly they didn't manage to put it all together, didn't win the start, and made a bunch of mistakes, along with having some technical issues too

Sorry American Magic, Do not pass GO, do not collect $200, Go directly to Jail...

Well done and full kudos to the Prada Team though.

They've looked a little shaky lately but have now managed a bump in boat speed and more importantly are also putting it all together properly on the course, and this is showing in the results.

A deserved set of wins, and a deserved progression through to the Prada Cup finals

Well, opinions here may differ, but it's water under the bridge now.

At the beginning of this challenger series, I would have bet that the Americans would have been at the top of the heap, considering the slow start of IUK and LR.

Both IUK and LR have stepped up their game, no doubt, and predicting a winner here would be tough. Both teams have remarkable talent in Ainslie and Spithill....let the games begin...

Good video illustrating the complexity of sailing these boats:
