Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

Wish it was course A but glad it's a NW breeze as thats always variable in strength & direction so may make for good racing IF VMGs are close. Might be some actual lead changes after first cross, here's hoping any way.

Wind forecast to increase by evening so will be interesting to see how much it comes up by 1610. Plenty of wind for those beasts already.

First race odds 27c ETNZ, $3.40 Prada Pirelli. Not much love for LR.

Breeze shifting to the north and gusts to 17 knots. Forecast is for the breeze to build for the second race to steady 15/16 knots and gusts to 20. Both boats out already with relatively small jibs and full (flatter?) mains.

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

21 years ago, I was out there in the Gulf anticipating an incredible competition after watching the LV Final America One/Prada high down wind spinnaker blowouts.

The AC was anticlimatic, so lets hope this one stetches out to 13 races and we all are the winners.

America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

Burling wins the first start and forces a LRPP error after the start!

Similar speeds upwind, maybe a hair better for TNZ through the tacks. 160m lead at first mark

14s at mark 1, 23s at second mark, but big split. TNZ seems to have slightly better VMG downwind.

@fxykty - agree with all your comments. So much for LR being all over ETNZ at the start. At least in race 1, LR botched it. Seemed like nerves to me. Bad call to go for the luff after the start too.

As you said, boat speeds similar, ETNZ VMG better downwind, ETNZ seem fast through the maneuvers (supposedly LR's strong point). The small foils seem to be doing their job.

Also during the pre-start, high and slow, the small foils seemed ok too - interesting given that this should be their weak point.

Let's see if this wind speed is the crossover, ie: if there is more wind for race 2 will ETNZ start to dominate?

Just saw the post race line graphs - ETNZ definitely make a gain through the tacks - interesting and maybe not what everyone expected.

I think the 2nd race start will be more telling as LR looked distracted while watching NZ really fast and impressive prestart speeds. May have unnerved Spithill

Now that they have a better feel 2nd start will be interesting

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

TNZ win the first race, close at each of the marks until the last leg blew out. It looks like TNZ are sailing lower and faster upwind and downwind - slightly better VMG in both directions. The worm analysis showed less speed loss in tacks, but LRPP more consistent downwind. There were some shifts and big splits; hopefully fewer splits in the second race. Boats are close enough to make it a sailing race!!

A couple knots more wind and both boats setting a smaller jib. More gusts and shifts, right side likely favoured.

Spithill wins the start, both tack to starboard with TNZ behind
