Great matches and that left entry won again.
Perfect race for the Kiwis

It's really showing us that this is still a match race, and winning the start is a massive advantage.

Thereafter the leading boat can exert a lot of control over the trailing boat and make them look slow and foolish.

And in these steady conditions there are no shifts to play to try and fight back.

Luna Rossa was made to look slow in the second race even though they were expected to excel in light air and have an advantage over ETNZ.

But that's not the case. As we saw, ETNZ is no slouch upwind in light air.

Also, did anyone else notice that ETNZ didn't need to 'defend' as much upwind in Race 4 (even though it was even lighter pressure), compared to LR in Race 3?

One lee bow tack was pretty much enough to shake LR off, ETNZ then extended downwind, and after that only a light cover was needed. LR appeared to need to work much harder to hold their lead in Race 3.

And ETNZ are defintely faster downwind, that seems clear now.
Both on Day 1 in medium conditions, as well as now on Day 2 in light conditions. ETNZ's downwind boat speed and VMG is often several knots faster.

But as we have seen, that is not enough if ETNZ get a bad start.

More work to be done.

Awesome series so far though

Looks like tomorrow may be similar or even lighter. Pity.

This contest feels so strange that I am beginning to think

Winning this Americas Cup is like getting a girl pregnant , without ever making a pass.[emoji4]

LR making a go of it..for sure...

Loose the start..lose the race...

Make one tiny mistake....lose the race

I think LR is well aware of the speed advantage ETNZ has....you can't lose the start and make a mistake and hope to claw back...ain't gonna happen, unless LR is hoping that ETNZ make a mistake..which would be doubtful....only mistake is really dropping of the foils...and this is sometimes beyond your ability to control...

Burling doing a good job at the starts...Spithill has his work cut for him..

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

In the post-race press conference Bruni confessed that dumping their boat in the water was caused by him missing the foil-arm button - twice! First when the order “board down” came causing late deployment, then again when the board went down but only part-way at first.

He commented that he was “pleased” that they were behind at the time, would have felt much worse if they had lost a lead because of the error.

But it does show that no matter how slick the operation, errors will happen and wow! How costly can they be.

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

Was watching a video where the port entry was deemed to favor a boat. Start at this end, and you are likely to win the start...and the race.

This entry (port side) is switched between each boat on each next race.

Considering that the next two points could be split again, that will leave us with a 6-6 tie.

So whomever gets the port side entry for race # 7, could be the winner.

Seems like both LR and ETNV know about this feature.

Intriguing ?? I'm sure there are many other variables as well.

Right now it is a 2-2 tie. One point per race. First to 7 wins.

It’s like breaking serve in tennis. And Spithill “broke serve” several times in the Prada Cup putting Ineos under the pump. Port entry doesn’t necessarily mean that boat wins the start. The wiliest helmsman wins the start and it’s no coincidence that Spithill is always on the helm when LRPP start, Bruni is managed the flight control.

Oh and by the way, your math is spot on (except for “race 7”) if the concept of “port entry wins” is accepted. Question then is - who gets port entry in race 13?

Burling made an interesting comment last night: “It doesn’t matter who wins the first or any other race, all that matters is who wins the last race.”

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

Ya, I'm sure both teams are doing this analysis, ie, who gets the port entry to determine race 7, assuming it gets to that.

At this point, if any team manages 2 wins in a row, that would be a huge obstacle to over come, as that would close the gate, in my humble opinion. It becomes a psychological problem on top of everything else.

My take is that ETNZ is realizing that speed alone will not assure them victory.
LR must be thinking, we've won 2, all we need is...ahem...5 more...

We'll know soon enuff....
