An outboard push a benetau 42?

I'm refitting a benetau first 42 1982 with reverse transom. I want to put a Suzuki 30 hp outboard on it because the Perkins 50 is unreliable. Will it work?

as long as you use an appropriate outboard mount and use big back I g plates on all bolts yea it will work just don't expect to be able to use the outboard in heavy seas . As it will come out of the water on every wave.
Go ahead and do it but also look at what you need to do to make the diesel main engine reliable .

correct and recommend a long or extra long shaft if possible

Madness to think an outboard will be more reliable than an inboard diesel.

That poor boat, sounds like its a few disappointing years away from the chainsaw.

Re: An outboard push a benetau 42?

At 72 kg that should not affect the weight distribution much. As recommended mount it sturdily and best with an ability to raise and lower.

I would strongly consider equipping such with a different prop so as to avail for much higher torque and to match the slower than normal advance rate [forward motion] than what most boats with 30 hp outboards travel at. A proper prop makes for a huge difference in performance. You don't want to run it fast and cavitate, slow rpm, probably 1/4 speed on the accelerator because it will be pushing a barge.

And if you can get such with a long shaft so as to be able to be set deeper and thereby minimize rising out of the water with wave action and boat pitching all the better.

Not sure if the Suzuki's come with the equivalent of what Tohatsu calls a SailPro version. Changed my medium sized sailboat over to the Tohatsu SailPro two years ago from an ordinary long shank Suzuki outboard and the performance gain was awesome. I operate the Tohatsu at about 1/8th accelerator setting and the boat travels at hull speed compared to having to operate at near full throttle with the same horsepower Suzuki outboard to achieve almost hull speed. Bigger prop and greater pitch on the Tohatsu, much slower rpm = better horsepower efficiency utilization.

Even there I wouldn't expect the same performance.

On rivers, there can be passing wakes that bring the prop out of the water.

And reverse with an outboard compared to a fixed 3 blade prop inboard is far worse.

Get the new high thrust Yamaha (25 or 50hp)

More rubber to meet the road with these. You’ll be happier because your prop won’t lose its grip so easily

Re: An outboard push a benetau 42?

I concur on getting a HighThrust, more push for the buck and the gallon.

Since 9.9 will push a 13,500lb, 32' boat at 6.5kt, I suspect that a 20hp would do just fine and be lighter and cheaper.

Yamaha has a 25hp HT.
Honda has 15 20 HP models, Called Power Thrust.

Re: An outboard push a benetau 42?

With cost of a new outboard motor, there must be some merit in spending that money making the diesel reliable. Can’t be that hard. Even a small chop on the water will cause the outboard on the transom to skip out enough to be ineffective.

Re: An outboard push a benetau 42?

IDK that's so true, yet. It's a deep draft 9000 lb keel. Three four five foot long crested waves should not lift it out of water. Short period waves on great lakes and inlets, yes a lot of up and down. But will experiment and report.

Just fix the bloody diesel. A 42 ft sailboat with a transom mounted outboard is stupid and dangerous. How are you going to shift it?
