Re: boat cushions

Which one of the steps in the Sailrite video is not possible in a small apartment? I made my covers in our spare room, which is 10'x10'.

Fair enough. I live on a boat, and have for 30 some odd years (different boats, but larger than yours, but smaller than your apartment, most likely), and all my sewing for them has been done aboard. Layout, however, has been done on lawns, docks, picnic tables, and the like, where there's a will, etc. I mended some friends sacrificial strip on their genoa on a lawn one time, with Jim turning the hand crank on the machine. Sometimes one really needs the room.

It's possible you can have some cushions made by the local sailmaker or an upholsterer. You'll still have to decide what fabric you want--vinyl or a breathable one. Pluses on each side of that one, but if they'll be exposed to much UV, they'll only go 4 or 5 yrs, unless they're Sunbrella, which is expensive.

Although acrylic, and chafe prone, Sunbrella has done well for cockpit cushions on our previous boat, and showed little chafe over a 10 yr. period; I have seen it used below, as well, and looks good. But really, you can use most fabrics to cover cushions. I used Wheaten Levi's fabric for one of our aft cabins, because Jim wanted a light fabric in there. Had I known then that the area was going to become our "shed", I think I'd have gone with vinyl, instead, for the ease of wiping grunge off.

Good luck with the project, in any event.

Ann

Re: boat cushions

I just checked YouTube and as I expected, found dozens, probably a hundred, videos for beginners on the sewing machine. Anybody can learn this. I learned as a boy from my mother. I'm doing my own boat cushions now - the first one is done and came out pretty good.
