Changing MMSI number on my Icom IC-M93D

I believe there was a thread at one time on changing the MMSI number on the Icom IC-93D, but I've looked and can't locate it. Is it possible to change the MMSI number without sending the handheld back to the factory?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think so. I think the purpose of the MMSI is that it cannot be easily changed. Defender.com, for example, needs your MMSI before they ship any new units so that they can program the unit. And then the unit becomes non-returnable.

I'm not so sure it has to do with safety, but rather an additional $$$ making machine

Thanks Luke -- seems a shame we can't change on our own. I'm overseas and had to change my MMSI with new regs with where my boat was registered.

I'll write ICOM and see what they say - there may be a local office.
