Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ????

A couple of thoughts on CO2. To test that the amount of dry ice is enough to fill the boat, one could place a number of those small fat votive candles at various heights in the boat so they could be easily seen from the outside. If the boat were sealed up, especially if one was going on a short side trip or excursion for several days to a week, the dry ice could be placed inside and when the level of the CO2 reaches the candle flame, it will go out. One can always drop in some more dry ice via the topmost hatch before sealing it. One can then go on vacation without worrying about fire or pilferage inside the boat. Upon returning, one can vent out the boat using the shopvac or a bilge blower that vents to the outside. Relighting your telltale candles also might be a good way of insuring that the CO2 is below that level. Bringing a new pet canary back from vacation might also demonstrate that the air is breathable again. In some places it is difficult to get Boric Acid - in the Philippines I think it is only available at welding supply places as flux.

Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ????

I have not yet seen any boat sailing the tropics / subtropics that does not have them. But sure, I met many boat owners who claim their boat does not have them ;-))

We found the bait available in the form of gel very efficient - they feed on this thing and die out. You have to use it twice within approx 2-3 weeks - so that you kill not only the big ones but also whatever hatches from the eggs.

Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ????

spraying all the interior corners is also a large help and so is closing ports when the lil ones fly around looking for places to live. ther eis a neighbor boat with swarms of em inside--- eeewwww----- have to step over them or squoosh em to walk across a cabin sole....yuk. that is a tad extreme. i love spray, as it actually works--have had much failure with boric acid. no fail with good poisons sprayed in tight dark corners. and on deck and lines and coach house roof and.......

Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ????

Catch a small lizard, put to sea. When the lizard starts to lose weight, the roaches are gone. Eat lizard. Alternative: keep a cricket aboard. They will hunt those suckers down in every nook and cranny and you can tell the temperature and dew point by timing their chirps. A friend, who had boat sat my 1934 Atkin-designed Sailer built by Matthews( the only sailboat they ever built),once left me a home made blowgun(a section of radio antenna) and six darts made from wood, sewing needles and tubular wicking. Dead accurate at cabin's length and you can leave them pinned to the bulkhead as a warning to others of their kind. In the previous century, you could buy Gator Roach Hives, short tubes with the paste (sounds like the boric acid/condensed milk/etc. mentioned in one of the posts) but they were outlawed after the millinium. OR; you sprinkle rock salt in the bilges and pour 151 rum on it. Roaches are low-lifes, so they will get drunk and stone each other with the rock salt, which will keep the rot from your bilges and floors by displacing the fresh water spores.

I would suggest removing all cardboard prior to bombing the boat. Previous owner bought a few items while in Venezuela and kept the cardboard. By the time he arrived at Annapolis, the roaches were manning the helm.

Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ?

one thing i noticed in mazatlan-- doesnt matter how clean you are-- they FLY into your boat to the light whenye are reading. funny-- they did that in st louis when i pulled all niters in college, also. cardboard hasnt brought em into my boat, nor do they stay, as they dislike the spray lol.....they CRAWL up the docklines. they multiply in dark places. ugly nasty things. spray kills em and if toxic enough will eave a residue for 3 months. i love spray,.

LOL, that's funny because I was just wondering what they might taste like. The thorax should be pure protein.

Mealie worms aren't bad fried up; I've had them a few times.

ok, found some recipes:

Cockroaches are probably the last things you wish to see in your kitchen. They often serve as an indictment on the cleanliness of the place. But in some abodes, they belong in the kitchen because they are part of the meal. Here's a simple recipe for the critters.

Method:

Simmer cockroaches in vinegar then boil with butter, farina flour, pepper and salt to make a paste. Spread on buttered bread.

Stir Fried Cockroach

Ingredients:

4 or 5 cockroaches (recently frozen)

1 onion

1 red pepper

1 green pepper

1 tbs salt

1 tbs corn starch

4 tbs cooking oil

2 cups rice

Method:

1. Remove and discard the solid wing covering flaps and all legs of the cockroach.

2. Put the whole cockroaches into a pot of boiling oil and quickly fry for 15 seconds.

3. Heat a wok until hot. Add four spoons of oil and put all vegetables into it to stir fry for three minutes.

4. Put the half cooked cockroaches in to the wok and add salt and corn starch.

5. Serve on or with a bed of white rice.

Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ?

I use roach motels. I am also very careful about what I bring on board that may be a roach egg haven. i.e. paper grocery bags, cardboard boxes, etc.
