Re: Mummified Mariner Found

And then there's all the topics on CF linking to those pics (while there were many reports without them to choose from and do we really need 5 or so topics to link to one and the same article?) and, in this topic, even reposting one of the pics ... just in case someone was avoiding them on DM

But imagine this is your loved one, and you see those pics ... They shouldn't have been posted, imho.

You are right of course.
I have seen a lot of things in my time, but posting the picture does speak a bit to who we have become.

The links remain, but the picture has been removed. It is not appropriate here.

Mummified German Sailor Found On Adrift Yacht

Ghost yacht horror as mummified body of adventurer found sitting at desk of vessel drifting at sea for years - Mirror Online

Interesting and slightly sad. Pictures are a little strange, but not truly graphic.

I'm still waiting for a week or two before I believe it. Too many internet stories turn out to be faked.

On the one hand I've seen it on a number of sites including major commercial ones, which lends some credibility.

But I've also seen major sites pulled into fake stories without fact checking and even if not awash until recently, a humid boat cabin doesn't seem a prime location for mummificaiton, which usually takes a dry environment.

Good point. Once you lose your mast, most monos will roll wildly in a storm. Unless he was strapped into the seat, it's highly unlikely he would have remained there for long.

I did find this Tweet from a non-sailor highly offensive:

Raymarine, no doubt.

Mummified body of missing Manfred Fritz Bajorat is found inside drifting yacht | Daily Mail Online

Wow, how was he able to stay in the nav station with the boat bobbing around I wonder?

And DM found a reason to re-publish the pics, and add some more ... meanwhile, his daughter is flying out to identify her father.

Re: Dead Sailor found adrift in Philippines

From the Daily Mail article : "Dry ocean winds, hot temperatures and the salty air helped preserve his body."

Is this how it works? I thought hot and humid air (as in the tropics) would have the opposite effect, but I am just a layman. Any expert opinion?

Re: Dead Sailor found adrift in Philippines

I am not an expert by any means; however, I have been involved in more than 50 death investigations. It is surprising how well preserved many bodies remain after weeks, months and even years. Although temperature, humidity, and many other variables come into play, with sufficient air movement and the absence of insects (especially flies) bodies can remain well preserved for extended periods of time. Most bodies left to the elements in warm climates deteriorate very quickly and the initial signs of decomposition are present within 24 - 48 hours.

I was involved in a case in which a body was found almost five years after the person had last been seen and the body was mummified. Although the location was in the southeastern U.S., the medical examiner felt that because the body appeared to have good air movement around it and there were no signs of insects that the body essentially "dried up". There was little decomposition, one could still recognize the person when compared to photos.

Re: Dead Sailor found adrift in Philippines

As the OP who found the original local newspaper report...my hope was that some member would know the sailor and alert his next of kin

Philippine police releasing the graphic photos does not surprise me as we see a lot of very raw footage on local TV, from road accidents and murders.

Perhaps the West is too squeamish by their standards.... I try not to judge...Here in the Philippines, taking animals to the slaughter house in open trucks is a normal daytime activity, which if I am following close behind in traffic, makes me Vegan for a while.

Personally, I am not bothered by the photos and see a poignant grace to a sailor's death at sea.

I am more bothered by the purposeful sinking by the locals to claim their prize.

Telling that both the body and boat survived at sea... before failing prey to the parasites on land.
