Rather then expect the responder to guess at the context...a lot of these debates could be ended if the OP simply states up front a little info about the type of cruising they do.

As for submariners, my knee-jerk is to write them off as some sort of weird fringe group, but I have heard, as a breed, they are some tough sons of b**ches, so upon reflection I hereby officially declare all submariners as "Cruisers, negative depth"

Indeed I know the idiom, but since we're trying to define a cruiser here - we really need to include ,

Are you fin keel, spade rudder?
long keel, kedge rudder?
canoe shape?

obviously, these are important when announcing you acronym

Another convert! But sir, you failed to specify your degree of cruisicity using my patented CRAP system!

What are you implying? That those of us who prefer fins are somehow not cruisers? That we are not good enough? You sir, are a keelist!

But I agree that we definitely need to define and categorize stern preferences. People who prefer a canoe stern really shouldn't be allowed in polite company. Sigh. I like me a good lookin' stern...

We’ve been married for 51 years and we are starting to get the hang of it. It is a life long adventure. Some days I’d call that long term. Others I’d say we are still practicing.

Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight?

We really do need to start up a cruisers' philosophy subforum.

Re: Defintion of a crusier

Define a Cruiser? I think Chris was right. Top of the list has to be plenty of storage space for beer and then plenty of refrigeration space for beer. I would put the second priority the ability to sail solo, whether that is real solo or simply gives time to enjoy time with the rest of the crew if there are crew aboard.
You cld make a graph or other variations but possibly it needs a multiple choice sequence that then drills down to the subject of interest. Alternatively a filter system whereby we can click on various filters which will then lead to a select target. Think the latter wld be best.

Ahh. What about diving preference: scuba, hookah, snorkel, free-diving?

For that matter, what about those who boat only to get to dive spots?

(Written as someone who prefers to breathe his air naturally, maintaining slightly positive ASL. While not otherwise occupied fixing my boat in slightly out-of-the way places.)

Um sorry. But I am absolutely sure that one of the key factors in being a cruiser is actually staying in the boat.

Silly divers...

hmm, seems to me they are "cruisers, positive depth". Of course, that just means they were former monohullers

Real cruisers only use lithium batteries as they provide a ready emergency source of the drug they need to treat their schizophrenia, and space aboard a cruising boat being at a premium having dual-use equipment is the mark of a real cruiser (as is mental disease - cruising aboard a sailboat is a definitive symptom in several conditions described in the DSM).
