Correcto...

Of course if you have approached the light polluter and they have done nothing about the problem you are then stuck.... as you will be right in the frame should anything untoward happen.....

Buoy/navigational horns/lights can be very annoying too. (My gal now refuses to stay at a hotel near Bodega Bay.) Docked boats with bright lights or active radar also annoy. Best contact boat owner directly or indirectly for them to consider their neighbors.

Re: Etiquette while docked

Motorboats gonna motorboat.

Lights don't usually bother me. Unlike their blowing wakes all over everyone else in an achorage, running their noisy generators at all hours, and noisy "boosted" stereo systems where all you hear at a distance is Thumpa-Thumpa-Thump or a repetitive bass line repeating ad infinitum.

Not much can be done. They don't know any better

Re: Etiquette while docked

As a general rule, I think it is best to minimize the amount of light on deck, unless it is for safety. I also object to excessive multicolored underwater lights in a quiet harbor. I sometimes see multiple boats in Camden Harbor during the summer with light up the harbor like Las Vegas. If a homeowner were to file a similar lighting plan with the town, he would be laughed out of the office. If one would prefer to go to Vegas than cruise the coast of Maine, I understand the impulse, just don’t bring Vegas to Maine.

Re: Etiquette while docked

Thanks everyone for helpful thoughts.
Yes I tried calling the marina & they promised to talk to him. Nothing happened.
I asked harbor patrol if there are any laws or rules just so I know when I go talk to him , she said unfortunately there were no rules or laws governing lights!
This is an unbelievably bright LED pair of search lights , angled up !
I will try talking to him but I doubt it.

Consider your negotiating tactics. If, like the fishing lights around here, this is some attempt at drawing attention to the owner's manliness, simply asking him to turn them off may not be effective.

Maybe let it slip that, in your area, leaving lights like that on all night are an identification signal for gays seeking hook-ups, and you made a terrible mistake. Apologize profusely and leave. I bet the lights are off after that.

Obviously, there may be other reasons this person thinks it's a good idea. My point is to try to figure out that reason, and work it from that angle.

I'm not sure about the " gay" tactic....the owner might be " gay" and invite you onboard....then you'd be in a pickle...

His bright lights are quite annoying , also a lot of my neighbors share my concern.
Are there rules or laws concerning that?
Thanks

"Etiquette" is the right word. Rules or laws are unlikely to apply. Rude? Perhaps.

They may well be work lights or security lights. Maybe the owner lives in your neighborhood and finds the lights reassuring.

They could be annoying. I find my hippy neighbors whose adult kids hang out in the driveway talking loudly at 3am annoying also. "Concern" is a big word. Concern on what basis?

I agree that communicating with marina management and asking them to talk to the boat owner is your best recourse. You are asking for a favor. Approach the situation accordingly.

Direction action on your part as some have suggested--I hope sarcastically--puts you on the wrong side of the law.

Re: Etiquette while docked

My best guess is that someone suggested he leave them on because it might deter theft or vandalism of his property.

Re: Etiquette while docked

Astronomers for years have worked to get light pollution laws and regulations passed by state and local legislative bodies. There's a good chance that some may be applicable in the locality where you're located. It's worth checking.

Re: Etiquette while docked

Why not just ask him if he can turn them off?
I don’t understand the problem.
Is this ‘send the lawyers in’ the first thing you think of in America?

Re: Etiquette while docked

I live across the street from a church that has 3 sodium vapor lights on at night. We are star gazers and the light pollution is pretty intense, but we found a spot in our backyard that is only mildly affected. We are glad that to watch Neowise we look the opposite direction to see it. In this case I think they are just worried about the property.
