I kinda stopped caring much about the guy after he bragged about ripping off a spinnaker pole from some fellow cruisers.

That's not the article. He wrote another one around three years ago about cheating a fellow sailor out of his pole.

Haven't seen that one. I don't really follow him, tho' I do enjoy his humorous writing style.

My mother used to be a humor columnist when I was young. It was based on her observations as a French-Parisian mother living in Florida and her (sometimes) wild children. It used to embarrass me because the "truth" could be stretched a bit for laughs.

Never met the fellow, but I did have a free subscription to CW for awhile. Fatty's articles were the only bits of light in an otherwise dim magazine. I am sure that if he swindled a cruiser out of his spinnaker pole, it was done in the nicest possible way, with the best of intentions and written up with an eye towards entertainment. As the inestimable Tristan Jones said, "never let the facts get in the way of a good story", or did I just make that up?
