Galveston to Mexico...in November

Hi folks,

Looking for any advice on making this trip outside of the recommend time of the year, which I understand is April/May timeframe. I think November is still early enough to avoid the northers that blow down in the winter months, but likely less than ideal being on the tail of hurricane season..

I'd be looking at a more or less direct across the gulf trip from Galveston, TX to Isla Mujeres and curious if there are folks with experience who've done this in the November / December timeframe and how that experience was, any notables to call out, etc.

Thanks!

Lots of storms right now. I've avoided going into the Gulf because of them.
Depending on how diehard you are, there are some who use the cold fronts to push southwards, but it makes for a bumpy ride.

Thx Capn_bill I imagine it is very much not ideal right now in February...I was more curious about the conditions in the November / December timeframe

The general thought is that you choose the back end of a norther to leave. This lets you get some eastward progress before the winds shift back around to SE. We would very much like to make a similar trip, so I've been following the northers since late last year. It certainly looks doable, and while the first 2 days might be a bit lumpy, at least you aren't bashing into it for 7 days straight.

Thumbs up Re: Galveston to Mexico...in November

I made the same passage early Jan, leaving on a norther, staying close to the coast for reduced fetch and reaching east to the mouth of the Mississippi before the wind clocked. From there you should have a good angle to head south. Find out where the strong north current is coming off the Yucatan so you can avoid it.
