Re: Got a plastic classic?

Here is our 1966 Alberg 30 which we found as a derelict on the beach in 1999 and restored to ocean service over a period of 10 years or so. I sold it to a young guy three years ago now and have stayed in touch with him as he works his way around the world - mostly singlehanded. He immediately departed offshore Seattle to SF, then on to Hawaii, So. Pacific, The Philippines and is currently anchored in Hong Kong, enroute to cruising the South China Sea and Taiwan. He reports no gear failures and no leaks! A testament to Dolphinite bedding compound!! At 58 years, the boat is almost twice as old as the Skipper and still going strong. This is the fourth Alberg 30 to be making a singlehanded circumnavigation.

Wow! Great! Is that a chain plate on the stern for a drogue?

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Hi Don,

thanks. Yes, very similar to a chain plate, only much heavier. It's a purpose built mounting point fabricated by the drogue manufacturer to shackle up a 1" bridle to either side of the boat. As I remember, the fixture is 3/8" x4" x 14" stainless, thereabouts. One on each side. Through bolted with a backing plate. Although on the Alberg I think we only needed to use thick, industrial grade fender washers on the inside, due to the Alberg's 3/4" FG solid core construction. Stout as hell, as it where. The drogue line then attaches and pulls off the bridle. Very effective system.

Dave used the plates to stern tie Dolce to the wall with surge lines during hurricane season in Hawaii two years ago. Big storm surge into the harbor but not even a crack in the gell coat after it was over.

Here's a couple of additional photos that show the deck configuration and some of the triple reefing system a little better...I lead all the reefing lines and toping lifts into the cockpit. Ahaha, the first reef is the blue line (blue water), the second is green (green water), the third is white knuckle (white water). The color code does help to keep the spaghetti sorted out when everything is piled up on cockpit floor. Almost all sail handling can be accomplished with positive control over the tiller, as needed.

Nice work on the deck. Herioc actually!

One thing that might make the work easier- try using a belt sander with coarse belts when stripping down large areas of FG decking. For some reason a belt sander will compress FG residue into sort of a matted by product and not blow it all over the place as a palm sander or grinder will do. And it removes significantly more material than most other power tools I've used in FG work.

Good luck on your restoration-keep making those small steps- it will be finished sooner than you know!

Oh yeah, forgot to say that it's best to make an album of photos in your profile. Then you'll see at the bottom of the screen "add photos to group." If you have joined the group, the group name will be available there to select. Then it sends whatever you selected to the group.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Here's are couple pics of Ilmarta, a 25' LOD plastic Vertue, built by Blossoms Boat Yard in the U.K, circa 1986 or thereabouts. Now laying Everett Marina, near Seattle, Wa. I believe this is hull number 41, out of perhaps 48 or so of these boats built in fiberglass. Over 200 wood Vertue's have been built since Andoliot hull #1 was laid up in 1939. Laurent Giles design, widely credited as the fore runner of small yacht single and short handed world wide cruising.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

^^ lovely, those GRP virtues look lovely, and the father and son voyage of the Sparrow around Cape Horn described in the book "My old man and the sea" is an inspiring read and and shows what these little boats are capable of in the right hands. Thanks for posting those photos.

For those who would like to post photos over at the Plastic Classics group, first join the group and then perhaps these shots with directions will help in making an album and then moving photos to a group from the album:

Re: Got a plastic classic?

OK, here is my new classic dream boat... Only 30 of them built. This one came into the cove where we were anchored on Santa Cruz Island. Just absolutely beautiful: Kettenburg 41, 1969. Similar to the Pearson Rhodes 41 but this one has a spade rudder.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Specs are pretty close to my Bristol 39. It has less water, but 10 gallons more fuel capacity which I would like. She has less ballast than my Bristol, though, 5K vs 6.5K- and I would like more. I bet she's probably a little faster, maybe not so much in a blow. I can see why you would like her!
