Tapered/keyed fitting), steering pedestal top-end rebuilt, exhaust system rebuilt, bilge bulkheads replaced, with new tabbing (embedded fiberglass plate into them so they are 3/8" thick tabs, then 4200 + bolted the bulkheads to that beefy tabbing), new aluminum fuel tank, new prop shaft, stern bearing house (+bearing), and stern tube... (Figured 50 years for an invisible piece of bronze hidden in some wood was good enough service life.) Some chainplates replaced, more to come, some standing rigging replaced, more to come... Added a bimini... Oh, and varnishing, and varnishing, and sanding, and varnishing, and scraping, and varnishing.

Work I'm doing this winter: Removed fasteners and and pulled teak from deck, for the most part they came up in one piece, boring out + plugging the old fastener holes, cutting new rabbets, repairing some core in the fiberglass deck underneath, sealing the ~1000 or so fastener holes in the deck, covering with a new layer of glass to be sure, and reapplying the old wood (still a good 3/8" thick) with TDS bonding epoxy. Also having a new aluminum main mast made by Klacko in Canada. And varnishing. and sanding, and varnishing, and scraping, and varnishing.

One of these days I'll get to improving the creature comforts!
You win. Beautiful!

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Could you elaborate on your keel bolts? I need to replace or sister keel bolt hangers, not through bolts in a cast iron ballast. Sounds like your hull is wood or a composite?

Re: Got a plastic classic?

I just posted a "Plastic Classic" sailboat for sale in the Plastic Classic Group.

It's a 1959 "S&S Design" New Horizons 25 Sailboat. It is in the water but is a project boat.

I'd love to find a good home for it rather than scrap it.

I don't know much about sailboats, but it looks like a weekend of tinkering with the stuff onboard and you could probably sail it home. Or just hang a small outboard off it, of course.

Located in Hampton VA.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

This forum had a lot of good discussions of classics, and they are still there, but it has gone quiet for the last few years it seems. Anyone know anything about this forum?

I don't know much about the forum, but it seems that there is some really good archived info there, but use seems to have dried up...

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Wow! I just tripped across this thread and read the whole thing! Killer job, Don. Hay Kim, I bought an Eldon sailboat in 1964 when I was 9 with my birthday money. About 2 months ago I was thinking back about how this sailing dream all started and remembered that boat, so I got on Ebay, and BOUGHT ANOTHER ONE!!! And yes I sailed my toy lots when I was a kid, she even sank once but I got her back! Now out of blind luck I bought a1966 26' Ericson Bill Crealock design w/ trailer for $500. Now the real fun behind

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Anyone on the west coast of USA able to take on a 1962 Spencer 35 let me know ( trying to find buyer for a friend ) boat is in great condition . the biggest issue it has is the original engine needs to be replaced. ( have many pictures for anyone that is wanting her.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

My first real project boat. (I have managed to turn all of my previous boats into projects but this one had a major restoration project ongoing at the time I found her) She's a early 60's Allied Seawind converted to a cutter.

This is a very humble announcenent for the availability of a Spencer 35! This is the the same model that Hal Roth and his wife Margaret made famous by sailing one he named "Whisper" all over the Pacific and around the world. He wrote a few books about his adventures. You don't get much more "tried and true" than that! Some very smart person will jump on this one I hope!
