I offers to sell him mine . (only 6 figures.)

NewHaul,

Such a bargain at six figures, do you take cash! Seriously I am sure the Columbia will suit our needs just fine for many years to come. I finally found a couple in stock Lewmar Ocean Hatches since I was on backorder from West Marine. So those are on the way, but its awesome.

Always keeping an eye out for a bit bigger though lol. My wife and son are also very excited for the Columbia 29. They want me to hurry and fix it up so they can all head out to warmer water adventures, cant say I blame them.

By the way any idea how many Defender 29 were manufactured? Yours in the only one I have ever seen.

the highest number Ihave can find is hull #163
http://www.columbia-yachts.com/registry.html
with the earliest being hull #50. But those numbers may be really high depending on if they did it by deck design or just base hull for the numbers. I have the same base hull as you and Don do. Just a better layout and better deck design.

the 29 is the better boat with respect to his specific requirements
The cape dory doesn't have captains/ quarter berths.

All the folks with ULDBs and multihulls and Dashews are looking at this thread wondering what is wrong with us old farts!! And they will just never know the elegance of a more civilized era.......

Well said Sir, well said. Although they seem to now want to listen to my record player its now trendy, and automatic watches are making a come back too. Maybe if we keep seeing more keels falling off the modern boat folks will think better hahaha.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

I think I have to sell my 1966 Columbia 29 mark 2. I have two boats and I now have two and a half years of sweat into my 1966 Herreshoff 28 ketch- wood. I love them both but two boats be too many.

Anyone know of a proper plastic classic with full keel or cutaway full keel under 36 feet and displacement of no more than 15k. That also has two aft quarter births or an aft cabin with two crew type births.

I know this is likely impossible to locate but just curious.

Thanks
Sounds like my Hallberg Rassy 35 Rasmus with center cockpit and aft coffin cabin. Look at Sedna - Hallberg Rassy 35

I looked at the link, beautiful boat to be certain. Not sure what a coffin birth is though. I am still looking around but haven't found pictures of it yet.

a coffin berth is in reference to the size of the bunk and enclosures such as lee cloths
The safest at sea berth has been determined to be approximately the size of a coffin. You move around less with the motion of the boat at sea and are less prone to injury while in your berth.
Hope this explains it a bit.

All good information, hadn't known any of that. I did find some more photos of Hallberg Rassy 35's. Not the classic lines of the S&S and Alberg designs I love so much, but really a nice looking boat.

There are two for sale on yachtworld, not bad looking. I do like the layout though and if I ever see one I would like to go look at it. I think another contender is the Pearson Vanguard, beautiful boat. Still keep hoping I will see another Islander 30 for sale.

So when were looking that's always something on my mind for the two kids. Even a little quarter birth that is entirely there space seems like a good idea. It really makes me wish they used the same layout of the Islander 30 on the 32 or 33 and I cant figure out why this doesn't seem to be a more popular layout. I guess most folks just don't need them and prefer more storage space. The small family cruiser isn't often seen in the layout we think ideal I guess.
