Re: Got a plastic classic?

Hi there!

I am a long time owner of THE plastic classic, a Rhodes Bounty 2 Yawl. 60 years young this year, and 12 years in the family. She is called Tiare. Our boys have grown up sailing her.

We would live to hear from other Bounty owners, to extoll the virtues of their seaworthiness, and bemoan the traumas of pushing the boundaries of glassfibre ownership.

Any owners in Europe would be especially welcome... As long as your Bounty is later than hull#37, as we are claiming to be the oldest glassfibre yacht in Europe!

Beautiful! Welcome aboard Ben! The Bounty II is one of my dream boats! Here's a link to the plastic classic social group, you may find another owner or threads there of interest to you. Check out the complete refit of a Rhodes 41 in there, that'll make you drool I bet!

Ben, why don't you add some photos and comments on the "Bounty II" thread there, it may catch the eye of another owner and/or enthusiast!

Re: Got a plastic classic?

BTW, yours looks like it's still all original with the original grab rails. Do you have the original chainplates bolted to the bulwark too, and the big bronze tiller? (As a kid there was one two boats away from me, all original, and I ALWAYS admired her but I never saw the owner come down to sail her.)

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Another great classic plastic yacht is the LeComte Northeast 38. I have had mine for 21 years and she is an elegant and beautiful seaworthy vessel. Incredibly high quality original Dutch Construction - hull built to Lloyd's specifications with an all teak interior. Mine is an MKII with cut-away forefoot, molded fin keel, and skeg hung rudder and this boat is agile and well balanced and easy to single hand. These boats are severely undervalued and not on the typical radar of most sailors but for those in the know, and for those that seek a great boat, I highly recommend them. I am planning to move onto my next boat so with some mixed feelings, I have put Sequitur up for sale and anyone that might be interested can view the listing on sailboatlistings.com under LeComte Northeast 38 Sequitur.

I love the classic plastic and also think the Al Mason 53 yawl is quite beautiful. I am thinking about a larger boat now as my plan is to spend more time aboard and I really want an aft cabin. Another boat under consideration is the Hylas 45.5 with the step down transom, a great feature for an aging sailor. I think these boats sail quite well and go to windward nicely, which is an important feature. Center cockpit also nice but hoping to secure next boat with an aft cabin so I can have a bit of privacy when cruising with family (now have 4 young adult grandsons) and friends.

I sailed on a Cheoy Lee Rhodes Reliant and delivered her from Huntington NY to Maine and it was a fantastic trip (many years ago). Got into quite a blow crossing Cape Cod Bay heading northeast from the north end of the canal out to P town and sailed very comfortably with jib and jigger in 40 knots of wind. That sort of rig is quite nice in a blow.

Best wishes to all you classic plastic yacht lovers.

Paul

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Just a couple of shots for fun. Second one is Cheoy Lee Luders 30. Both just off Santa Barbara, CA on they way back.
Let’s keep those classics sailing....

Tough business you got going there, but looks like a great place to be doing it! When do you break out the longboard?

We are not longboarding the bottom, however we are longboarding above the waterline right now...glorious sanding...prepping for final topcoat.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Just completed our second season with this 1990 Able 34 Cutter. She is serial number 15, a slightly extended version of the Whistler 32.
