Re: Great story on Shackelton

I did a few seasons in Mcmurdo and when you walk out of the Galley there is a huge blown up picture of Shackelton and his sailboat all cold and frozen......always think of that picture...that is when men had cahonas of steel!!!!

Re: Great story on Shackelton

The job/help wanted ad which he wrote when seeking crew for his expedition was truly unique. An it was definitely a winner!

I visited his grave on South Georgia - simple, yet moving headstone.

Re: Great story on Shackelton

Shackleton's voyage from Elephant Island to South Georgia was recreated in quite close detail back in 2013. 2013 Expedition | Shackleton Epic

But to me, the real hero of the Shackleton voyage, and on the previous attempt by Scott, was the Kerry man Tom Crean.
Sad to think that a man who went through all of that should die at the age of 61 from appendicitis, as no doctor was available at the nearest hospital.

If you go to Ireland, visit his pub, "The South Pole", at Annuscaul.

Re: Great story on Shackelton

If Tom Crean was the man in charge at Elephant island I fully agree.

Shakelton had his moments but was also a gigolo and his ego was the source of the disaster.

A far better man was Bob Bartlett. Try reading The Last voyage of the Karuluk or his autobiography. REALLY good stuff. The real deal.
