It can depend a lot on where you are from and where you will cruise. Are you a US citizen? Will you spend most of your time in the US or Europe or Caribbean or elsewhere.

If you are a US citizen and plan to spend time in the US then you need a policy that covers health care in the US. Whatever health care policy you like, just check the plan's coverage for travel and emergencies outside the country. If you will not be in the US and will want health care in for example Europe, then health care coverage can be much less expensive

If you will be traveling to remote places but still keep the US as a frequent home base then you might want to add DAN travel insurance. DAN, originally Divers Alert Network focused mainly on divers injured when diving in remote locations but now covers any travel for any reason. They mainly focus on covering the cost of evacuation back to the US for emergency care which can be really expensive.

Re: Health insurance

Ref DAN, DAN now has a service called DAN Boater, which is similar to the original DAN but tailored to the cruiser. Principle element is medivac. Cost is ~$100/year/couple.
DAN also has a DAN Travel Insurance which starts at ~$600/year/person which is an annual plan and also has a medical coverage aspect. Different levels of coverage, check out their website for details.

Re: Health insurance

I keep reading about DAN from people who have used it out of country in emergencies. Sounds like a great service.

I've read a number of reports from travelers that said it was wonderful and a few said it saved their lives. It isn't very expensive so I think it's well worth the cost.
