Help, Liveaboard here, under the berth is making a broken pump sound

Here's the sound

It goes on for quite a while, then turns off after 20 minutes or so, then back again. I don't know what it is. I don't know if I should wake up the owner of the boat that we are renting it from.

We live on it and have for almost a month.

I really don't want to wake him up for nothing, but also if its a serious problem i don't want it to get worse. Sounds like a bilge pump gone wrong or something similar.

Thank you for any help

I would try to investigate and see what you can see. Is there water in the bilge ? If you can't figure it out I would definitely wake the owner. If i were him I would want to know about it.

Might seem silly but why don't you lift the berth up to see what it is !

The boat may be infested with polyestermites. When they are feeding they make an intermittent tapping sound.

I think it’s the bubbler cycling. You’ll get use to it. When the sensor picks up water approaching freezing it turns the bubblers on. 5c likely.
I’ve had runabouts in October or early November and winterized them after a run to have water freeze days later. A cold snap will turn them on

If you don’t have a bubbler and you’re in the tropics. You have a plumbing leak and it’s a water pump some distance away.

Lift the bed and check it out. Going off of sound alone is not helpful. You at least need to determine if the sound is coming from inside or outside of the vessel.

temps were getting below 2c so close to water freezing so it might've been the bubbler.

I turned off the circuit that was causing the sound and will tell the owner this morning. Waiting so it's at least 10AM.

It did turn on when it started getting colder. I'm warming the entire boat right now with electric heaters but temps outside are around 6c so we 're out of the freezing range for sure.

Thank you everyone! managed to get some sleep intermittently too

Surly you can have a look?
Sounds to me like a belt driven pump having an issue.
Wake up the owner?
Why not
