Re: How long does it take to complete one circumnavigation?

Only 17 Fisher Cats were built so they can't have appealed to many buyers. I imagine Fisher did not even recover the costs of building the moulds. I would love to survey one, not sure I would own one.
I like the idea of the MacGregor 65 or some other long skinny yacht for a circumnavigation. Yachts that size are really too expensive to maintain long term. But to just buy, use for the voyage and sell again should keep it affordable.
If I did a quick circumnavigation it would be long passages with month stops in various ports. That way you get to experience some culture and highlights without trying to see everything.
Cheers

Re: How long does it take to complete one circumnavigation?

Is this an academic question or are you planning a circumnavigation? If it is the latter then the minimum realistic time would be at least 2 years and then you’d be pushing it. Sure racers can do it in some months but that is scary and dangerous and probably not much fun until you finish. If it’s a leisurely cruise around the world you will need to leave the boat or stay on board during cyclone/ hurricane seasons. It’s all about picking the right weather for your intended area of cruising. Also, pre cruise preparations usually take much longer than you plan for....getting your house, animals, finances , bill payments plus the boat in order to be able to leave.
I planned for a 2 year sail around the world but took 4 years leaving my boat in various ports for cyclone seasons and flying home or to other destinations. If you are serious and not an arm chair sailor allow as much time as you can. You’ll probably only do it once and it’s likely to be one of the best and most satisfying things you ever do.

It is a cool thing to sail around the world. I don't know how long it will take. I am trying to make money and then do it in the future.

Yes it is a “cool thing” to do. Just remember you don’t have to actually own a boat. Cruisers are always looking for good , crew. If you own a boat and need cruising funds you can leave your boat in various ports, fly somewhere to work then resume cruising when you’re able.

It took us 5 years. Finished in 2018. That is a fast run when you consider how much there is to see. Wish we would have taken 10 years.

I used to think with a 30-35 footer, it is sufficient for anyone to go anywhere.
But think of when you need years or even decades to circumnavigate, maybe a much larger boat like 40-45 feet is essential?
Couldn't imagine living for years and spend so much time on a 30 footer.

i'm going to go into 'old fart' mode here and question whether this is yet another case of the modern disease ?

back in the day a 30-35' boat was considered big enough for just about anything (heck, i did my first hobart race in a 33'er).

now'adays, it's gota be 40-45' or even bigger to carry all the stuff we carry with us, plus be 'comfortable'

bottom line - it's not the boat that's important...it's the people.

cheers,

Why would anyone rush through SoPac? If one wants to “see” the Pacific go to Costa Mesa. Done. There are too many “must experience” destinations in SoPac it would be impossible to enjoy them in one year.

The problem is French Polynesia only allows you a 90 day visa with one 90 day extension if it is applied for in advance of your arrival at your countries consulate. Of course that is, unless, you are French.

My experience has been that even the best set plans change the minute you leave the dock.

cheers,
30-35 feet back in your day is different from 30-35 feet of today.
Boats back then of that size was more than 6-7 tonnes to 9 tonnes.
Today the same tonnage applies to 38-42 feet boats.
30-35 feet boat today probably carry less than 40 gallons of water and less than a third of displacement under ballast, and couldn't carry whatever you carry back in the days.

cheers,
consider, if you will, the many long voyages sailed by Eric and Susan Hiscock in their 30 foot Wanderer III. They and their cohorts were the first to inspire me to long distance cruising.

In their later years they had larger boats, but often remarked how much more trouble they were.

BTW, Wanderer III is still cruising today, currently in the Falklands.

Re: How long does it take to complete one circumnavigation?

In my wanderings, I often found that while heading to destination "B", I got sidetracked to destination "C"...which then led to destination "D"....

By the time I got to destination "G", I suddenly remembered my plan was to go to destination "B"...by which time, getting back to destination "B" would be a major undertaking.....

This process continues to this day....

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"
