How to deal with aggressive ducks...

After taking a mooring ball in Annapolis, we discovered two local ducks had seized control of our dinghy around midnight. They appeared perfectly comfortable in possession of our only means of escape. Needless to say, it was a terrifying situation. Anyone else encountered the same dilemma?

A 12ga should take care of it. [Ducking]

Yeah, but ventilating the bottom of a boat might result in unacceptable alteration of its bouyancy.

Very small birdshot from a good distance. Will annoy the ducks but only give some non-skid to a hard dinghy.

Really, this is supposed to be in the joke thread isn't it?? ...and they are aggressive??

Hope you have enough food and water in your boat as you maybe held hostage there for awhile.

Come to the UK and try geese or swans.. aggressive ducks are like being savaged by a Chihuahua..

No such thing. As per boatman, try taking on some Canada geese or a p1ssed swan.

We get waterfowl occasionally wanting to rest on boats at our club. Resting... sure, fine. Pooping? Sorry, no thanks. We use plastic snakes, or shiny streamers etc that move in the breeze, to deter them. Seems to work.

Actually found pointing and shaking a pool noodle will keep attacking geese/swans at bay. If you are brave enough to try it once, it does work!

What color of noodle works best?

Back on the ducks... Could put two lines of fishing line diagonally across top of dinghy. Rig in a way that it is easy to take down when you need to use it.

Re: How to deal with aggressive ducks...

When we were in Annapolis one summer (not the right time,) we had the dingy floating next to us and lo and behold, the ducks found us. Or actually found the dingy.

Not a problem in scaring them off the dinghy, but did they leave a lot of poop. The solution was to hoist the dinghy out of the water with the spinnaker halyard, just a couple of feet. Also solved the growth on the bottom problem. Once in awhile it was to much trouble to hoist the dinghy and the ducks would remind us to hoist it.

They were all different colors and just grabbed one out of the bin. They all seemed to work equally as well to stave of the pack of 5-6 swans.
