Re: How well does a Catalina 30 Sail?

Strongly advise to get one with a diesel engine already installed. The Atomic 4 was a great engine, but very old at this point, and more than that, the diesel is safer.

Re: How well does a Catalina 30 Sail?

Just sold my '78 built standard rig Catalina 30 "RUMBOTTLE" that I purchased in late '79 in Anacapa. Sailed from USWC to UK and circumnavigated the world Singapore to Singapore via Cape Horn, the Falklands & UK. Great singlehanded boat. 5.2 kts average for 30,000 miles.
- Tacks through 90 degrees
- Tracks beautifully down wind. With Autohelm (Windvane+external self-steering rudder) it sails downwind with spinnaker.
- Sails upwind without wheel assistance
- Sails well on all points with Self-steering except downwind in light airs
- Great 20-25kts upwind with No.2 jib & reefed main.

Photo of "RUMBOTTLE" 3 weeks ago, just before selling and in Southern Ocean, from the spreaders, with self-steering doing the work.
