Hydraulic steering

I have a 48’ yawl and I can wheel her just fine but I have women and little sailers on and I want them to wheel her with ease also.I am familiar with hyanautic steering but when it malfunctioned it wasn’t easy getting it bled and back on line at sea.She can be a handful at times and I like that, but I might not be there to wheel her always.Any ideas?

Re: Hydraulic steering

I like hydraulic and if properly installed it takes little looking after.
If you are happy with the preset set up maybe look at the feasibility of changing the ratio to get greater mechanical advantage.
You could do this with a longer rudder arm or quadrant, a smaller sprocket on the wheel, or an intermediate shaft or gearbox to chnge the ratio.

Regards,
Richard.

Re: Hydraulic steering

Look for a thread on hydraulic steering by delmarry. He installed it on his boat and did a very nice write up on the process.
