ICW thru Louisiana

I'm thinking about taking my 29 foot ( 4 foot draft) sail boat back to Texas from Florida on the ICW. I'm a bit concerned about the area around New Orleans and locking thru the Mississippi and the heavy barge traffic. Does anybody have any experience with this area of the ICW?
Thank you in advance for your information.

I suggest you wait until the flooding is over.

Re: ICW thru Louisiana

I have taken the ICW from south of the Rigolets to Biloxi a couple of times. It is well marked in that area. Just take your headings according to your charts and keep an eye out for your markers and buoys. West of there I can't speak to so someone else will need to chime in on that stretch.

Hold off a bit, the hydrography of S Louisiana may very well change in the next few days. We took the outside and it was easy and safe, but also boring and ugly. Check with the Corp about the flow around N.O., that should convince you.
