Hello Jonathan (?),

it would help to know in which part of our world you are and where and when you want to sail. Apart from that I would recommend to ask the big companies (like Pantaenius) for a quote or better to use an insurance broker for marine insurances.

Regards,

-Richard (VK4WRS)

Re: insurance cost for a sailing boat of 64ft long

Insurance invariably involves surveys and areas you intend to sail in. Some premiums include lightening damage cover which can create considerable variation. It's a minefield.
Marina fees vary considerably from place to place and if you are using the "daily rate" or the "monthly rate." Many marinas may find that 64 ft is at their size limit, or they put you at the far end of jetties for depth reasons, leaving you far from the land facilities.
A 64 ft boat is one really big expensive boat and I would be very concerned with just the work involved in managing it. Repairs, maintenance crew requirements etc. A 64 ft boat would "own you" and that's why most successful cruisers own and use much smaller boats. Cruising is often described as "doing repairs in exotic places".
Generally, larger boats have deeper draughts thus restricting the ability to explore coastal areas, Yes, there are exceptions but if you are asking about insurance then it would suggest (at least to me) that your experience around boats in general is probably at the novice level. Insurance talk is a common topic amongst experienced sailors.
Maybe I am wrong but boats of that size are more likely to have had a chartering history to justify the initial cost. Be careful if your intended purchase has had a charter history -- the layout may not be what you want plus the boat may be in need of major work such as sails or engine replacement. Just be very careful. Bargains are rare and you need lots of experience to discern a bargain from a lemon.
I might suggest that you do some chartering or cruising with others to get a more intimate feel for what you can manage comfortably and financially.
Best of luck.

We went through this before purchasing our boat - surprisingly affordable. Just get a quote from several specialist insurance companies such as TopSail and Pantaenius etc.

Re: insurance cost for a sailing boat of 64ft long

thank you guys for this reply, insurance actually get some quote and surprisly less expensive that i planned. so it is good.

for the question of bill above i will reply to your question.

regarding the marina fees i agreed that certain marina may think the boat is to big but i dont expect staying every month in a marina, as long as i can i will be in anchor.

fees for marina i know it.

for the maintenance well yes it is a big cost, absolutly, i dont have a crew im sailing with 3 other people, 2 of them are quiet good in sailing but we plan to sail for two month in the atlantic cost of frnace with some poeple to get our hand in it before going and sailing to the mediterranee.
for the maintenance we will try to do as muchg as we can ourslef and heavy work will be made with company.

no charter history before, it si a new boat.

Re: insurance cost for a sailing boat of 64ft long

Depends on area sailed

1 to 1.5 % per year of declared value for European waters within 100 miles of coast.
Additional cost for Mediterranean.
Ocean crossing 3% + per year of declared value for crossing interval,

As the poster is apparently a total newcomer to the sailing scene, he's likely to be heavily surcharged by a marine insurer.
I'd query whether he'd get all risks covered and would suggest a premuim nearer 5% of the declered boat value.
It's all very well getting budget quotes - the real crunch comes when you submit the full application and get the actual premium.
I've only once submitted a claim - for a break-in and burgulary in Mside marina in Malta.
That recovered 12 years of premiums. Surprisingly the insurers still wanted my business,

As to standing rigging - fractional rig boats tend to be far harder on their standing rigging - I was given a renewal suggestion, every 15 years for a boat exceeding 20K nautical miles pa. Twice that for a conventional masthead-plan cruiser.
Unfortunately it's usually the swages at the top of the standing rigging that goes.
I've had one gravity storm (off Cabo Gata), under bare poles, the mast folded 300mm above the coach-roof. All standing rigging OK.
