NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

Hi new poster here.

My wires on the NMEA are:

TX+ (A) Red
TX- (B) Black
RX+ (A) Yellow

Ground. Clear

Wires on the radio are:

Output + Grey
Input + Blue

I'm lost and not sure which to connect chich.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Which Standard Horizon VHF Radio?

Also, many times you can do a search on google and find an article where someone has done this exact thing with their SH Radio

Re: NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

You cannot just wire NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183. They are different protocols. You will need a different radio that accepts NMEA 2000 or some kind of interface converter. If you are trying to get GPS info into your VHF many GPS receivers have both NMEA 2000 and 0183 outputs.

Re: NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

I guess you have a converter. The problem is that the radio has a single ended port while nmea0183 is differential.

There are all kinds of tricks and gadgets to get that to work. I do not recommend that. Instead, buy a new Standard Horizon with nmea2000 support. I just got their model 1850 and it’s great and cost effective

Re: NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

Welcome!

First of all, I think we're talking NMEA 0183 here, not NMEA 2000. The two are not compatible (cable-wise.)

What are you trying to accomplish? What's the device you want to connect with your radio? Do you want the radio to feed the device data, or the other way around? Or both?

do you have a backbone?
You can not connect the SH radio to the chartplotter directly, as far as I know.

You need a backbone to connect both as drops, then they will talk.

After setting up the backbone (if you dont have it already) this should help.

Re: NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

The NMEA 0183 Gateway allows you to connect NMEA 0183 equipment to a NMEA 2000 network and vice versa

https://www.amazon.com/NMEA-0183-Gat...0&sr=8-1-fkmr2

If you already have a SH GX2200 VHF you can make your own chart plotter for the price of the gateway

That's the one I have and can't figure out which wires on the radio to wire it to. Unless you connect the the two negs to common.

Re: NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

you should have 6 wires coming off the back of your GX2200. (which include the 4 NMEA Wires TX +/- and RX +/-

I just hooked mine up to display its AIS data on a 19" monitor/HDTV with a Raspberry Pi 4 Computer ($90) and an RS422 USB Adapter ($5) over an OpenCPN free downloaded chart. I'm using a GPS USB "hockey puck" to show my boat's position on the chart.

Note. Only trouble I had was that I had to switch the gray and brown wires from the diagram coming out of the VHF and into the RS422 USB adapter which feed directly into the Raspberry Pi. Ten to the monitor/HDTV with the AIS Data

You will still have the compatibility problem if trying to connect to NMEA 2000 unless you buy the gateway convertor it appears but here is the wiring chart from the manual for the GX2200

Re: NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

did you look at the link I posted?
https://www.milltechmarine.com/Addin...2200_b_24.html

it shows how to connect to an adapter. Their product, but should be similar.

what baud rate did you set the adapter to? it has to match the radio.

My SH2200 is set to NMEA0183HS (38400) from the factory as I use AIS data.

Re: NMEA 2000 TO 0183 Radio Wiring

or get the NK-80 from Milltech. Their support is second to none! I wired it up as directed on that page and the AIS just worked on the plotter (all I use it for)
