Re: Pants me! What do you wear? Non boat related.

As noted, both Duluth and Carhartt make pants and overalls that accept slide in knee pads.

REI

They have several pants which breath and do not cling to your skin. Also, some are marked UPF 50+. Same with shirts they sell.

To get the most UV protection, either very dark colors or very bright colors. Those absorb more of the UV rather than reflect it.

Not only am I an avid sailor but I'm an avid backpacker. I wear backpacking clothes while sailing almost exclusively. The easiest brand to recognize is Columbia but there's others. My personal favorite is Outdoor Research. Have you ever noticed that all the flats fisherman in Florida wear Columbia? There's a reason. Visit your local REI and you'll see a wide variety of clothing that'll keep you cool in hot weather.

I like "Under Armour Men's Match Play Vented Pants". They're golf pants but I've only played golf once in my life. I've found them to be cool, durable and comfortable. If you hold them up to the light you can see lots of tiny holes in the fabric.

Here's their description:

Breathable mesh polyester body fabric is ultra durable & delivers superior ventilation
Material wicks sweat & dries really fast
Stretch engineered waistband for superior mobility & insane comfort

I really like Duluth dry on the fly, light weight and cool.

I second Duluth trading, many options for durable pants. Also Wrangler shorts at WalMart or at wrangler.com.

All of my favorite pants are Columbia PFG style pants. I find that cotton and salt water makes a pretty unpleasent combination. It sucks up lots of salt water, and then the water evaporates, leaving the clothing stiff, soggy, salty--and stinky.

Jeans are just terrible on a cruising sailboat. One pair of jeans can soak up a gallon of water, and it takes a tankful of water to get them clean, and then days of good weather to dry them.
Columbia PFG are nice. Under Armour makes some that are similar. Pretty much all I wear unless it is too hot for pants of any sort.

I love my Coolibar pants. Extremely light weight and SPF 50+. Plus if they get wet they dry almost instantly. Find them on Amazon.

I have friends who cruise with hospital-style scrubs. Kinda pyjama-ish but they seem to work and some types come with deep pockets.

Columbia UV fishing pants. You can pick them up at an outlet store in the US for $30 or so. They’re comfortable, tough & dry very quickly.

I haven't worn jeans in 30 yrs. I also shop at thrift stores and no guilt when throwing away. I buy 7 tops and 7 bottoms and at the end of the season since they well worn, I throw them out and start all over!
