The Sea of Cortez is one of the best places in the world to hang out on a sailboat, and its not far from you. It would probably be better to take the first few months in the Channel Islands area, and then head to Mexico after hurricane season.

If you keep moving, you will be left alone, even in California, as long as your state registration sticker has the right year on it.
