And is defined as a “Power Driven Vessel” under Colregs Rule 3:

(b) The term "power-driven vessel" means any vessel propelled by machinery.

(c) The term "sailing vessel" means any vessel under sail provided that propelling machinery, if fitted, is not being used.

This isn't controversial at all. You want to get people going, talk about DDWFTTW.

....and almost forty years ago there was Jacques Cousteau's ship Alcyone with two large vertical wind turbines.

Always wondered where they could put the tricolour light.

I remember Revelation II from way back, really interesting inventor/builder. The underwater propeller is enormous and the noise from the gearbox connecting the two propellers air/water was so noisy it made the cabin almost uninhabitable.

Not forsaking the upwind properties there have been long forum discussions about the ability to go downwind.

Brilliant ideas don't always turn(pun) into practical solutions.

Yeah I saw it tacking into the wind. I am not certain the physics explanation but pretty sure directly upwind AWA 0 is impossible as the forces on the rotor blades - frictional losses cannot power the boat directly upwind without some source of extra power

Re: Sailing Forward Direct into the Wind

The principle of using a propeller to enable a vehicle to be powered via a mechanical linkage to the wheels from that propeller directly into the wind or directly downwind was resolved some time ago in a public challenge and $10,000 bet, the results of the “Blackbird vehicle” were almost 3 times the wind speed downwind and twice the windspeed upwind. With the rapid adoption of foils on just about every type of waterborne device ( including surfboards with tiny electric motors) the future of windpower looks rosy if we can just get the size of the rotor or propeller down to a less enormous size.
