Re: Sinking of Forever catamaran

Another sad story of a lost boat.
Lesson learned?

Certainly the hard way for the people on board and hopefully we all remember this if we're in a similar situation...

Re: Sinking of Forever catamaran

When we make landfall we remove items from our ditch bag such as emergency food rations, water, passports, money, credit cards, boat and health insurance which we carry with us while we are on land. We don't return these items to our ditch bag until we are ready to depart to our next landfall. I did put a caveat at the end of my post that "maybe the delivery crew composed the circumstances of this blog poorly"

Some folks will try anything to avoid spending their money.. usually turns out to cost more in the long run.
Wonder how their insurers will feel about it..

That seems to say it all.
Agree and situations like this will become more and more commonplace thanks to GPS and modern electronics. “Cruising” is becoming for many “RVing.”

The Bahamas the perfect example, mid 80s when I started going over there pretty wide open. Today make sure you stay off “the magenta line” (suggested route) where all the traffic is :-)

Want to really have fun? Anchor in 4’ of water in Kidd Cove (so no dragging monohulls can get to you) and listen to the VHF at 1am as a strong cold front comes through. Classic.

The Pacific I preferred, at that point when you dropped your hook in who knows where you could pretty much bank on the fact that your neighbors knew the score ;-)

Rant over :-) This is why I still wince when we encourage folks who ask if they can buy an ocean going vessel for 20k and take off with a family of five, a dog and they have no sailing experience.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Re: Sinking of Forever catamaran

... still sounds like a delivery to me.

When we started this adventure of delivering catamaran Forever to Florida for Steve and Darla (owners), we made the decision to share the journey with anyone and everyone who wanted to do some armchair sailing with us.
Highlights done by me and 'we' (from https://knotanchored.com/2018/03/14/...-have-to-tell/) should be "... Chrissy and Stevo ..."

Regards,

Carsten

There is a difference between a delivery and a professional delivery ;-)

Snore,

It sure does. I wonder how much encouragement they had gotten from people saying just go for it?

Re: Sinking of Forever catamaran

An ironic set of quotes on their social media post just before they shipwrecked.
https://knotanchored.com/2018/02/01/passage-making/

"We’ve done two 25hrs + sails on this journey with sailing catamaran Forever . . .

Here’s the thing. You can’t predict Mother Nature. You can only prepare for the adventure. This includes the obvious boat safety checks, weather predictions and preparing to eat underway . . .

That said, it pretty darn windy here right now in USVI. Important thing is having a competent, knowledgeable Captain and a seaworthy vessel. We are lucky to have both these things on this trip, thanks to Captain Stevo and S/V Forever."

Well, I'm glad the "Captain" got 50 hours of passagemaking under his belt in the week, before napping happily at anchor during a blow and going hard aground on the rocks. So much for keeping up with those safety checks and weather forecasts.

Pretty funny that their blog is named Knot Anchored.

How’d you wreck the boat?

It was not anchored...

It might be OK (if still stupid in my books) to go on your own boat with such self-declared lack of sailing experence. But I don`t think it is acceptabe to take responsibility for someone else boat under those circumstances.

I think they are referring to when they initially started their sailing adventure, which appears to be in 2014...

Why do you remove the emergency water and rations?
