Re: Smallest size "luxury" yacht

My idea of luxury is not having any crew or gin drinkers with their pinkie sticking out around.
But seriously any boat with crew quarters is luxury so usually 60 foot plus. I have surveyed boats that size and the crew are normally jammed in the engine room along with a toilet.
Cheers

Re: Smallest size "luxury" yacht

Small luxury? About 34 foot minimum. (like a Halberg Rassey for example.)

You'd want to be fairly comfortable with your crew, if for luxury you're expecting gin served on the fore-deck...

The smallest luxury sailing yacht I ever sailed on as paid crew was a custom Little Harbour 55'. I'll never forget; she actually had a tiny bathtub in the master stateroom - at the request of the Admiral...

So from my perspective, I would say 55' or 60' (and like Rob says, any extra space is lost to 'crew quarters' at the bow).

p.s. As a matter of curiosity, Keith, what constitutes a REALLY GOOD G&T in your books? My particular poison is Bombay Sapphire with Original Fever Tree tonic and *only* fresh lime...
I had a bathtub on my old Formosa 51 but that certainly wasn't a luxury yacht.

"luxury" is subjective. What is luxury to one might be ostentatious to another and roughing it to a third.

For me anything bigger than 30 ' is a luxury yacht. Even though my son that owns a 31' disagrees.

Re: Smallest size "luxury" yacht

For us luxury is about space, comfort and ability to stay out indefinitely

To people who came on ours for a visit recently luxury was all about shiny, brands and perception of wealth.

They weren't doing too well after being struck onboard in a small space with a couple of kids for a few weeks and running low on supplies and felt forced to head out and punch into some rather ordinary weather to get somwhere.

We could easily spend another 6 months here if we had to
Luxury (-;

Re: Smallest size "luxury" yacht

The German Sirius 35DS is my ultimate luxury yacht.

It's a saling furniture, with all comforts and super laid out to the owners specification.
The deck saloon offers a 360 degree view of the world, and the centrally placed owners cabin the most comfortable sleep.
Separate shower, dedicated workshop/technical room, heated locker for your oilies and just a plethora of inspiring little details.

Now, this is for going cruising in luxury, not for showing off how poor you grew up and just how newly rich you have become.
A lack of taste that no old money would ever touch.

LOL!

Who bit you, Fore and Aft?

I dunno, but I make it a practice of never drinking my G&Ts with my pinkie sticking out... but then I'm on the paid-crew side of the equation... Owners don't care how - or if - I drink gin.

Just as long as it's not on their boat!

Re: Smallest size "luxury" yacht

To me, a minimal Luxury Yacht has a crew of at least 2, Captain & Cook.

Real Luxury starts at a crew of 4, Captain & Cook, First Mate, and Mechanic.

Super Luxury of course starts at one Helicopter, and a submarine in the hold.

Just as Little Wing says.

Yep, the larger cats usually just have bigger cockpits while the bridge decks stay about the same size. That's not a bad thing as most people would prefer more space in the cockpit than the salon. A 50' cat is about the smallest boat I can think of that might be considered a luxury boat as many of them have an ice maker. washing machine and dishwasher installed as well as A/C and at least three heads. I'm thinking super yachts start at about 70'.

I'm always amazed at how easily we can get off topic in some of these threads.

Somebody mentions Gin and it all goes to hell.
