Well, I would point out that a cruiser is still working. Maybe it's not for wages or income, but we're all still working; often too hard .

And to be fair, there are also many of us out here still working... in addition to the work of living in a boat.
Still worth it!

Sometimes it s a lot of work to have a good time and enjoy life and to see the humor of the whole boat life thing.

I don't see any bitter responses or piss poor planners. To me the scope of the thread was a discussion on the unvarnished truth. What followed are examples of that. Just because the responses include the unvarnished truth doesn't make the responses bitter.

Ask me how I know about these things........
Simple solution, stick the trash bags in the dinghy and tie it off your stern..
Basic dynamics takes the smell downwind.

?? Clam shells, lobster shells, shrimp shells, all go back to the sea from which they came. At least they do on my boat as well as anyone I know. All other garbage, including any compostable food (vegetable cuttings, etc) goes into the garbage. (If it didn't come from the sea, it doesn't get returned to the sea).

Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat

So.
My truth was a $190k boat that needed a little work. We lived on board and traveled for 3-1/2 years on a budget of about $3k/month plus about $30k of boat upgrades/maintenance.
It was wonderful and I recommend it. We only stopped because of health issues

Maybe you missed the part about the dog doo-doo..............

This only works until there is no more room in the dinghy.............

The truth is that the southern US gulls are NOTHING like the ones in the NE that will take your steak off the stern grill

True.

I've carried on the same approach to paying work that I've always had. I work as little as I can get away with to sustain my life. This is a big reason I chose my current lifestyle. Living on my boat allows me to live pretty cheaply, and comes with a whole lot of other benefits (adventure, learning, reduced eco-footprint, exploring, etc.).

Cruising is as broad a lifestyle choice as choosing to live on land. In other words, it can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. This is why I asked at the very start "who's truth"? There is no one truth about cruising.

Some years back at one of the Cape Cod beaches a gull used her beak to UNTIE my plastic shopping bag with peaches in it. Wish I filmed it, would make a great YT short.
