Sounds like automatic car door locking and unlocking

Hello,
I recently bought a 30' Alberg and there is a constant noise similar to the automatic car doors locking and unlocking. Any ideas?

Internal halyards slapping?

I have to admit that I am new to sailing, but the sounds seem to be coming from various places in the hull.

Sounds "coming from various places in the hull" especially parts of the hull that are below the waterline are likely to be made by snapping shrimp.

Re: Sounds like automatic car door locking and unlocking

David,

you said 'constant' - really? day and night, under sail, under power, at anchor, at a dock? calm and rough?

basic troubleshooting -

is the noise in sync with boat motion (something lose)
is it dependent on wind speed (something flapping)
is it dependent upon electricity? (disconnect batteries AND parasitic loads)
etc etc

correlating under what condition the noise occurs will lead you to the source.

Re: Sounds like automatic car door locking and unlocking

Thank you. It's been constant since last night. I have been at anchor and the weather has changed some since then. I will start with the batteries. Thank you

Re: Sounds like automatic car door locking and unlocking

one other point - frequency.

if the frequency of the clunk is slow, as in 4-5 seconds, more likely to be in sync with rocking motion - things shifting in lockers, something floating in the bilge, a piece of wood hung up on your anchor line and tapping the hull.
ROUND things like cans and bottles will roll....clunk in lockers and coolers

If it's really quiet, the sound of my slide-by locker doors drives me crazy when trying to go to sleep as they flop the 16th of an inch in their tracks - not constantly, but enough to JUST get used to either the quiet, or the flop, when they either start up or stop again ;-)
I wedge them with a fold of cardboard

noises that are fast are more likely to be tied into wind - halyard clangs increase in both intensity and frequency, to the point that in 20kt winds, a halyard is likely doing more than 2 clangs a second -

Re: Sounds like automatic car door locking and unlocking

Slatting of sliding locker doors can be stopped with stick on felt pads.
They don't last forever, so we keep them in stock on the boat.
Easy to replace.

Re: Sounds like automatic car door locking and unlocking

Do you have an automatic battery combiner?
My old boat had one with a relay that would clunk when activated.

Grab a drink start at one end opening everything and find where it’s coming from..... 30 feet is not too much real estate.

Good luck
