Re: St. Martin Charter Oct 7 - any updates?

I would recommend that you get any deposit back ASAP. Been in touch with friends down there. Much worse than imagined. Charter companies may be going broke and taking the deposits with them. Sad. No place to be now unless going to help.

I would like the biggest obstacle after is the boat sound would be infrastructure. Where would you get supplies. They are going to need all the resources they can acquire for the near future to rebuild. I wouldn't think there would be anything "extra" to support tourism.

Good luck to you.
God bless to all those effected.

That is not correct for most marine insurance policies, for which hurricane risk coverage is of the essence. In fact the insured wants to have the damage attributed to an "act of God" (such as a hurricane) that is covered as opposed to poor preparation, etc.

I would think that supplies and help would get shipped in very quickly.
After all, tourism is what the island lives on.
The Windward Islands get hurricanes every year. (Admittedly none have been as bad as Irma). But they have a lot of experience dealing with the aftermath of these things.

Speak of what you know
It depends. If hurricane force winds causes your boat to drag its mooring across the harbor into another boat, your hull coverage will cover the damage to your boat; however, your liability insurance is likely to conclude that the loss was caused by an act of god, not your negligence, and therefore will not cover the the damages to the other boat.

I speak from personal experience.

I think that insurance companies define Act of God as "We don't want to pay out that much money."

the port in philipsburg was destroyed, not sure how able they will to land containers in volume.
probably they will have to use barges to offload essential supplies untill rebuilding can take place

I am sure that they will find a creative and resourceful solution.
It is not a poor island, I assume.
Hopefully they have plans for this type of disaster.

i would guess getting the port up and running and rebuilding the electricity generating plant will be high on the to do list....

hopefully they will not get hit again on saturday by "jose" but a repeat hit does look likely unfortunatly

Not to be critical, but I hope you're planning to assist in the relief effort when you're down there. Hard to imagine sipping rum punch on the deck of my charter while people are hurting from the devastation. 90% of the island is thought to be destroyed.

I hope you do go, and I hope you get involved with helping in the recovery effort. THAT would be a rewarding vacation.

there is an ocean-going barge already parked on Front Street, next to the Bvlgari store.

the Simpson Bay Yacht club marina is pretty much sunk and destroyed. I considered it somewhat of a hurricane hole, but nothing can protect you from 200+mph gusts.

Re: St. Martin Charter Oct 7 - any updates?

I spoke to American Airlines. They said they expect st. Martin to be down for quite a while, especially with Jose right on the heels of Irma.

So we changed our trip to Curaçao and hope to go to St Martin next year.
