Re: The cabin is never clean no mater how much I clean

I find that most of the "dirt" comes from shore. So when I anchor, the boat stays much, much cleaner than when I'm at a dock.

I also advocate bare feet on board, always. For many reasons, including keeping clean.

bedspread. Make the bed every morning. Then at night, remove the bedspread and go to bed. We find that also helps with humidity. It keeps the sheets from feeling clammy when you first go to bed.

A good small battery-powered vacuum cleaner. No shoes of any kind in the cabin.

We are always barefoot in the cabin, so I can feel every grain of sand or crumb of food on the sole.

My Pearson originally had a no-skid texture on the sole and the woven cloth pattern would trap dirt, dust, chocolate and take hours with a sailing needle to pick out the schmutz.

I laid a 8mm bamboo floor over the old sole and just glued it with silicone and a few screws. It is much easier to wipe clean. Screws in the sole? Don't freak out, the PO had screwed carpeting everywhere.

They say astronauts shave ALL their body hair to avoid...hairs...floating around, I can't imagine living with a dog on board.

Re: The cabin is never clean no mater how much I clean

We sail a catamaran, so behaviour is slightly easier. Anyway:
Street shoes taken off on the stern (which is GRP)
Boat shoes never go on the street. Even though - soles checked from time to time.
Inside cockpit/cabins/saloon - barefoot or boat shoes.
One mat on stern before cockpit entrance to clean street shoes.
One mat at saloon door.
Mats by beds.
Hand held rechargeable vacuum cleaner.
Wet floor wipes.

Never own a dog that doesn't match your interior

I put "astronauts in space" into youtube. Here's an example:

Invest in a good rechargeable hand vac, like a dyson. Not cheap, but (in my best russian accent) strong like bull. Keep it handy with the little upholstery brush attached. It takes 15 seconds to grab off the charger and zip around even our fairly large saloon, floor, counters, sofas, etc, so do it twice or more times a day and you'll be fine. No shoes, door-mats in front of passarelle, on stern and before companionway door too of course.
Try 2 large dogs
OMG I wonder why there not bald
but as for sand and grit never seem to have this issue in my bedding

Re: The cabin is never clean no mater how much I clean

Not sand or dust but fluff. Never-ending fluff! Clean up today, tomorrow all the corners of the boat are full of fluff. Must come from textiles but can’t be identified, just generic grey fluff. We’ve had this on different boats, in different countries, on moorings or marinas, even on anchor for six months in the tropics where we wear almost no clothing and just a sheet on the bed.

So it must have to do with our choice of clothing and bedding but for decades we’ve never been able to isolate the source.

No sand for me.
But girl hair - everywhere.
Even the very occasional boat cleaners I hire seem
to need to mark their territory.

Get a feather duster and gently dust yourself and partner down top to toe before getting into bed. Any other issues may fade into insignificance.
The only litter that may be a consequence is more children.

OMG, a boat with grit? I thoroughly sympathize! I can't imagine that happening.

I had it for about 90 seconds once. Still gives me goosebumps. I'm not sure it will happen again in my lifetime. Like a great comet.

Ron - got to say I like your "soup of the day" = Tequila (neat with a lime slice, thank you).

But on topic, my shore based scenario based on my feline "roommates", who use their litter box, and yes, some litter tracks worse than others. But someone makes a special mat, like a rubbery, course velcro, that captures grit, I think better than carpet and waterproof, for rinsing out etc.

And I'd chime in my agreement with shoes discipline, boat shoes only on the boat, street shoes come off before or as stepping aboard. Bare feet (anytime other than frosty temps, at least).

Re: The cabin is never clean no mater how much I clean

No pets here, no girlfriends (but am looking ladies! ;-) ). Coastal cruiser and have to wipe down my interior at least once daily when at anchor. Am currently in a marina with a highway bridge and a train bridge about 1/2-mile away. Have to wipe down the inside of my boat at least 3-4 times a day due to dirt and diesel dust from train exhaust in order to keep it looking immaculate. Sacrificial bedsheet in the V-berth is a PIA but well worth it.
