your input is noble; however dated.

it's no secret that the sailing industry, in many ways, is and has been stuck on old technology (often times for a good reason

open your mind and compliment the fella. as he asked please, warn him of what he's missing. a little less harshness wouldn't hurt, and in the end, let your salty ol soul learn from his ambition, determination and forward thinking skills.

his post impressed me, his ambition intimidates me.

he will have successes, most likely well in tune with his failures.
There’s a distinct difference between being open minded about approaching an activity or problem from a different direction and encouraging him to pretend that the laws of physics won’t apply to him because that would interfere with what he’s been dreaming about doing. Almost nothing in his original post makes sense and we’d be doing him a disservice to pretend it does. You simply cannot outfit a seaworthy 45’ sailboat for under $100k and sail it around the world without an engine, but with all the comforts of home including a watermaker and washer/dryer, etc. and especially when you are far from being an accomplished sailor and don’t even seem to understand the necessity of becoming one.

If he’d said a 30’ boat that was a witch at sailing to weather and he was an accomplished and savvy sailor and only planned to use his electric motor to get in and out of harbors and didn’t care about having any electric appliances, (like the Pardeys but with his auxiliary electric motor) he’d be getting a whole different response because that is quite doable for certain skilled and determined and very patient individuals. But, as he originally stated, the OP’s whole approach is ridiculous and not even close to anything he can possibly achieve.

He needs to about triple his budget, start taking lessons now to become an accomplished sailor and understand that his knowledge and skill as a sailor is all that will stand between him and disaster since his electric motor will provide such limited propulsion, and get realistic about what all the things he wants to be operated electrically aboard his boat are. He can dream all he wants that 2+2=100 and folks that want to be seen as encouraging can nod and agree with him, but that won’t make it so and the first time he tries to motor off a lee shore in winds so strong that with his limited sailing skill he cant beat into them he’ll learn the truth about that very painfully. He did ask the question and it’s MUCH less painful for him to be told the truth on this forum so he can adjust his plan and at least have a chance at capturing part of his dream.

Re: Thoughts on my plans so far.

If you read his posts again you will see that he is only interested in sailing to move his living space from place to place. He said he doesn't expect he will like sailing. He has no experience but he knows better than those that do.

Saying that we are not encouraging his dream and we should be is kind of like encouraging someone to jump off a bridge because he knows he can fly.

Yes, you can sail around the world without an engine and many people have done it. However sailing around the world without an engine but with a clothes washer and a water maker powered by solar and regen electric power? Maybe after 20 more years of technological improvements but not today. It will never be cheap or easy. If it was a lot more people would be doing it. Even among sailboat owners how many actually cruise - maybe 1 percent?

Encouraging an unrealistic dream is not in the OP's best interest.
