Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

please could somebody compile a list of rules specifically for renaming and relaunching a boat. I would like to put this up in my yacht club sothat the newer yachties have some kind of protocol to adhere to. (lets leave the red haired irish virgins off it)

Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

I did not change the name of the used boat I bought because:
- I did not object to the existing name (Binda of Western Port)
- The boat was (and is) listed in a register of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority
- I suspected the members of the boating club (of which the previous owner was a member, in the harbour of which club the boat was and in which I wanted to keep the boat) might object
- In case the boat is stolen it will be easier to retrieve it
- I will get into contact sooner with persons who knew the boat before I bought her perhaps providing valuable information

Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

The Royal Navy viewed changing a ship name to be acceptable. They were likely more superstitious and familiar with risks at sea than I.

Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

Unless you are truly superstitious then there is no reason to not rename your boat, but in the same breath no reason that forces you to rename your boat (other than if you want to register in a new locality that already contains that name).

The earlier poster who wants to continue the heritage of the existing name has a great reason not to change.

If you’re leary of changing the name but want or need to make it more yours then you can always just add a suffix of a numeral or ‘of <my favourite place/home town>.

This YouTube fad of elaborate renaming ceremonies is just self-promotion. Unless you truly are a member of some religion venerating the Roman/Greco deities.

Rename your boat, drink some champagne (and give some to your boat), and you’re done. Create some boat cards with your picture and boat name and email and you get bonus points.

Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

totally agree.

Re-name your vessel, and have a professional remove the old name, and re apply the new name.

Then, have celebration party, and I like the idea of some shirts and caps with the new name.

You might want to also have a new , quality log book with the new name emblazoned on the front cover.

Rum seals the deal.

Yep, be proud of your new to you vessel, the the name that you have chosen.

No need for any witch doctor whacko rituals of any kind.

To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

Forgot to mention that a common way to keep and extend the current name is to suffix with a number (this suits those renaming for registry purposes)

If you want to keep the heritage but make the name more your own then suffix with ‘of (special place)’.

Why cant it be done just for a bit of nautical fun? The world is full of made up ceremonial and religious dogma. No reason why you cant use a bit as an excuse for a boat party.

Of course for fun, nothing is stopping you. My comment was just about the various YT vlogs that turn it into a required song and dance cause they’re so down with nautical sh*t.

Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

I just repainted and renamed my boat as part of renewing her. Partly be cause I didn't like the name and partly to personalise. My 20'er I just left the name. I don't have superstitions so I'll allow women and bananas on my boats.

Of course you want to observe rituals, with many friends and much Champagne. I found this post and followed the ceremony when I bought my Oceanis 331 a couple of years ago.

Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

We renamed ours but I'm an old school sailor so we followed the rituals. First remove anything from the boat bearing the former name. Offer libations to the gods (Poseidon or Neptune) and request he remove the old name groom his book of protection. Then you can proceed to the naming ceremony. Remember lots of libations are required.

Re: To Rename Or Not Rename A Boat?

I spent five years researching used boats to find the right one. During this time, I went back and forth over owning or just chartering when we wanted to sail. My wife suggested that we name the boat "FlipFlop" if we bought one. This seemed both appropriate and a good name for a cruiser.
Found the boat. In the process of negotiating, we found that the current name was the granddaughter of the owner: Isabelle. Which was my wife's grandmother's name. The owner was born in Malta, where my wife went to school. He had a son named Steven as we do.
Now, I ask you did we re-name the boat? HELL NO, I am not going against that karma!

If you do not like the name do not buy the boat.
