Universal (Westerbeke) 24hp rebuild info?

I am looking at an early '80s Pearson 35 powered by a Universal 24hp. I've owned two previous boats powered by Yanmar and you can find rebuild kits all day long for those, but I can't seem to find anything for kits on Universal (westerbeke). Any info would help...

Look at the starboard side of the engine, just below the injector pump. Likely to find a flat panel with a serial number. Most likely a Kubota 1101.

Indeed.

In 1977 the Model 5424 was introduced. It was a 68 cu in, 24 hp, 3 cylinder, based on the Kubota D-1101 block, and fitted with a Hurth HBW-50 marine transmission. It was built from 1977 to 1983. Approximately 1,050 were sold.
In 1983 the Model 5424 was replaced by the Model M-30, a 68 cu in, 24 hp, 3 cylinder, originally based on the Kubota D-1101 block and fitted with a Hurth HBW-50 marine transmission. It was built from 1983 to 1987.

The Model M-30 was the same size as the Model 5424, but later M-30 engines were based on the Kubota D-1102 block. It was built from 1983 to 1987. Approximately 400 were sold.

Re: Universal (Westerbeke) 24hp rebuild info?

My winter project was to rebuild my Universal M-25XP (Kubota). The serial number is hard to find if it has been painted over. It is not stamped into the block, it is etched. I gently sanded the paint off with very fine sandpaper.

The reason I ended up doing it myself was because I could not fine a professional to do it for me. My 34 Catalina is located at Erie, PA.

My lessoned learned: Time. Parts are available, it just takes time to get them. Find a good machine shop. I found one through NAPA. Some things I could not do myself, i.e. head work, pressing bearings in and out.

Price of parts. Internal parts are one third the price if you get the parts through a Kubota dealer. Where a farmer would go. Also, things like glow plugs, injectors are one third the price. Gaskets, etc. as well. Marinized items like cooling, alternator, starter motor etc. will have to be bought through a marine supplier. Temperature sending unit has to be paired with the gauge. The oil sending unit if it just causes an audible alarm to sound can be bought through Kubota.

Have fun,

Re: Universal (Westerbeke) 24hp rebuild info?

Kumar Bros sells rebuild kits and parts.
https://www.kumarbrosusa.com

I bought a very nice Kubota shop manual for my Universal M25 (Kubota D-850 engine) from their Kubrousa Ebay site.

The Catalina 34 owners org has a LOT of info on the Universal engines including manuals:
https://c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Manuals

If you can get the Universal part number from TOADmarine supply's site, you can shop around online for the best prices (sometimes on eBay).

However, the big cost savings come from deciphering the KUBOTA part number equivalents. Example: an NGK glow plug from Kubota (or other sites) will cost you $5-$6 where the "Universal" part number will be 5x that price...

Re: Universal (Westerbeke) 24hp rebuild info?

Hi, I wouldn't mind an option and I'm jumping on your comment because you have some detailed responses here.

IF they stopped making this in 1983...

I happen to have a 1984 (O'Day 34) with what I thought was a M25 and now I suspect it is an 1983 M25 but installed on the 1984 boat. Would that make sense?

I don't want to buy a rebuild kit for the wrong engine.
