There is no need. I have a satellite account, and I am watching. There is no need for him or anyone else to spend their money on this. It's done.

Hope that clears it up.

Did anyone calculate if the engine might be still running and or if the batteries might still be ok?

No, the last ping has been posted here.

I think that there is some poor understanding on the forum about how good the SAT services are with regards to class B units.

They don't show up on the satellite very much.

For AWW's boat, for example, there were only 13 pings from the time they left Tenerife until the last contact. There were ZERO detections from 12-6 until 12-17, for example, and then none again until the 19th. At that time, the incident was already underway based on course/speed data. The AIS was detected 9 times from the time of the incident until last contact.

I believe that AWW has all of these positions.

Also, Class B course data on a rolling boat has little bearing on reality with a single ping.

I would not put a lot of stock in the C/S reading of the last data point.

That was my impression as well, and why I think an AIS in a small airplane might work. Assuming of course the one on the boat is still working.
Does he have no Solar? How big is the bank and what was left on? I'd think assuming LED position lights and nothing but AIS and bilge pumps, an average cruising bank ought to last a week or more, after the engine quits?

I wouldn't give up hope, but it sure would be nice to get another Sat position report off of the AIS

Antigua to provision. Probably back to Barbuda in a day or so. Panama in March.

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

This case made me wonder if different vessel tracking websites have got different data sources for S-AIS. So I started trial periods for Marinetraffic.com and fleetmon.com with satellite features enabled which are at least using data by ORBCOMM satellites. Also received current data from Exact Earth ShipView application.

All three services show the exact same last position / time on DEC 23 already mentioned in this thread.

Any of the common h/t's with AIS should function well from a light plane, assuming the on on the boat is still working. It only has to receive, not transmit, so it should not be a regulatory issue no matter what the flight licensing agency is.
But I got curious enough to check out the price of satellite AIS data. It seems like the first company I looked into will supply live satellite-AIS data for up to 5 vessels for one year, at a cost around $75. Not unreasonable at all.

If you were going to take AIS on a plane suggest to rig unit, antenna and battery and take it on board add complete system, rather than try to power from plane which opens can of worms. The coverage will be amazing at 5,000ft

This is a screenshot from my navionics. Each anchor is 30nm apart. The red line is where I think it might be now.

Can I ask how the 9 pings you have track on that map, do they plot a projectable course or are they all over the place?

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

You can "temporarily" install most anything in an airplane without filing a FAA form 337 (major alterations and repair) It's "permanent" installations that are trick, this is why you can clamp a handheld GPS to the control yoke and plug the power into a cigarette lighter socket, because it's temporary.
The only thing that is pushing it in my opinion would be the antenna, cause surely you would want that mounted on the outside of the aircraft.
Very unlikely there would be an issue with it unless there were an accident or incident and the installation was a contributing factor

Please check these and supply lat and longs of each.

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

I was referring to the 9 positions prior to 12/23. If you are missing some of this history, tell me. When we first got into this you said that you had several positions. This is also what I have. But, if you want them posted, I will do so.
