USCG Document

I’m looking at a 1970s boat that has current USCG registration. However, I see no history of prior registration.

Looking at the transfer process USCG seems to reference the need to have all previous owners sign off and original bill of sale? I’m confused about what I’m going to need to complete transfer of the USCG? Shouldn’t it just be a matter of current owner completing transfer forms with me?

Is it weird there is no USCG history coming up? Other boats I’ve looked at showed multiple owners when I searched the USCG database.

Re: USCG Document

If it has a current USCG document, you only need to submit it along with a new application for documentation. https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/D...dgxia6sw%3d%3d

Re: USCG Document

This CG-1270 form makes no sense… it has no instructions and only asks for owners information.

Don’t they need the current AND new owners info?

I’ll be sooooo relieved when this thing is registered and in its slip lol

Re: USCG Document

There is absolutely NO need to have all previous owners sign off. You are right, that makes no sense, and you are reading the rules incorrectly. If you are buying the boat and the current document has multiple owners listed, they do need to all sign the bill of sale, just as you would reasonably expect.

Lots of legitimate reasons the boat might not have a history of ownership with the USCG. It might not have ever been documented by former owners, just state registered. Or it might have been foreign flagged. There might be nefarious reasons too. Make sure HINs match, for example. A lien search might be a good plan...

Re: USCG Document

Be sure to get executed and notarized CG-1340 USCG Bills of Sale when you make the purchase. Do not make any errors or cross-outs on any forms! They must be perfect and correct. This is one area where an experienced broker can be very handy making sure the paperwork is correct.

Contact the USCG documentation center https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Our-Organiz.../Contact-Info/ if you have further questions. You may have to wait a bit, but they're very responsive and helpful.

Re: USCG Document

Unfortunately we’re skipping broker to avoid tax collection in Michigan.

Seller was happy to use the broker at his marina, but MI requires him to collect sales tax. I got scared of paying double tax when I relocated and decided we should just go for it privately.

I did notice the HIN isn’t on the USCG, but a “manufacturer hull ID” is. Which isn’t matching the HIN in the boat ad?

Re: USCG Document

I’ll add The owner is a really nice guy and great to deal with.

Lot of other people I’d use the broker and risk double taxation

Re: USCG Document

The Coast Guard "Official Number" should be permanently marked on some interior portion of the hull in such a way that it can't be easily removed or altered. In the past it was often carved into a main bulkhead. The Hull ID Number, which is different, usually on the stern of the boat, must be included on CG 1258.

Re: USCG Document

HIN: says n/a

Manufacturer Hull number: has a number inserted

Then the search also shows the USCG number

Where are you seeing this information? If you have a copy of the USCG document, just use exactly what is written on that document when filling in the 1258.
