El Toro
Columbia 29
Albin 25
Amel 41
I still own the last two, but I’ve owned various rowing skiffs etc. I paid less than $30k for each of them. The Albin 25 and
Amel 41 were “garage finds”…boats kept in doors for a good part of their lives.

4. $1,600 - Kingfisher 20ft - twin keel sailboat that can cross oceans.
5. $500 - Alacrity 19th - smaller twin keel can not cross oceans.
6. $4,000 - Watkins 27 - coastal cruiser with a big cockpit.

At the time each of these boat fit my needs and budget.
Chronologically:

1. 1977 Tanzer 22, 1979-1984, San Pablo/San Franciso Bays
Good boat to begin learning how to sail. Sold due to assignment in Europe.

2. 1978 San Juan 28, 1995-2006, Puget Sound, British Columbia, Ketchikan Alaska, Vancouver Island circumnavigation. A great sailboat getting me back into sailing and taking me anywhere solo short of offshore. Many fond memories. Sold after testing for offshore waters and divorce.

3. 1979 Tayana Vancouver 42, 2007-present, Puget Sound, British Columbia, roundtrip Hawaii, Ketchikan Alaska. Very beautiful, comfortable, and stable sailboat that will take you anywhere under any conditions. I spent five years researching and searching before purchase.

Each of these sailboats held a special relationship for me. I don't understand fickle owners.

Always a quick and satisfying resale result. Sailing performance always superior. Cruising models are innovative. Three very successful offshore round trips to eastern Caribbean . Nothing comes close.

Re: What boats have you owned?

Educator who never made a ton of money!

16' Snipe
18' Windrose (5 years)
25' Catalina (swing keel) (9 years) sailed in San Juans and Gulf Islands
30' Tartan (5 years...loved that boat!)
23' O'Day Tempest (2 years) (downsized when bad times hit)
25' Catalina (bought my old boat back) 9 more years!!
30' Yankee (loved that boat, too!) 7 years
26' Albin 7.9 Meter (have owned since 2014....downsized.. $

Mostly have raced and cruised the Columbia River and done some coastal racing with the Tartan and Yankee. Most of these boats were trailer sailors, so i could do the San Juans and Gulf Islands every summer.....

Re: What boats have you owned?

First boat was 16 foot square ended fiberglass canoe with 3 hp outboard. Very cutting edge in 1960 and lots of fun!!
24 foot wooden cabin cruiser rescued when I was about 10. No motor. Leaked like a sieve. Rowed it around
1960’s Beautiful 20 ft mahogany runabout with 165 hp interceptor gas gobbling engine. Wish I still had this one
Long hiatus while life intervened
1972 Spencer 53’ center cockpit sloop i gave a total refit. Lovely sailing
1960ish 180’ ex CG cutter conversion. Twin EMD 8 cylinder generators driving single electric screw. Very stable economical ship albeit a bit rolly. Bulletproof with redundancy on every system
1976 130 ft trawler expedition yacht conversion. Beautiful comfortable yacht interior with tough go anywhere exterior. Single CAT main and CAT get home.
2006 27’ cabin cruiser with single diesel Volvo. The Engine ran away and blew up at 400 hours.
1980 Palmer Johnson 105 traditional yacht with cockpit extension. $5 million refit in 2009. New CAT C 18 engines. Seakeepers and NAIAD stabilizers. Needs both!
18 ft cat tender with 115 Yam. Many other small tenders

Re: What boats have you owned?

- Started with 11’ styrofoam Sea Snark with latine rig
- Then 13’ Lone Star day sailor - sloop rigged with 2 hp kicker
- Next a 19’ Express pocket weekender
- First keel boat a 1987 Euro design Tanzer 25. We were dealers. Daysailed & vacationed on Lake Erie for 10 years. Great pocket cruising/JAM racing platform for me, the admiral & our 2 little girls.
- 1987 Freedom 30 when we outgrew the Tanzer. Sailed all of Lake Erie & adjoining waters (Lake Ontario, Detroit River…) for 11 years. Fell in love with free-standing rig. Will likely never go back to wires. Sold the boat to friend when time came to start thinking about retirement cruising boat - F30 now located in Texas.
- Purchased 1991 Freedom 38 in 2006 - in anticipation of retirement. Did refit in 2016 & shoved off in 2017. After year of cruising (moving Her Diamond from Cleveland to S Florida). She’s now at Burnt Store Marina (near Punta Gorda FL) and we spend winters cruising & summers (on land) back in Ohio. Cruising blog HerDiamond.net

Re: What boats have you owned?

I crewed on yachts for decades.
1. Various hi tech windsurfers ($000s)
2. International 5.5
3. Various Etchells ($10,000s)
4. Beneteau Oceanis 45 - share ($10,000s) great entertaining boat - very average sailing and way too wide.
5. Dufour 395 - share ($10,000s). Average sailing (underpowered rig). RV interior super flimsy.
6. Custom timber 1986 38’ fractional rig sloop. Huge renovation job still ongoing ($100k+). Great boat but serious money pit. Fast cruiser racer. Storage a bit of an issue - along with smallish water tank. Beautiful to be on and real head turner.

Re: What boats have you owned?

Kingfisher 12'
Lightning 19'
Pearson 26
Sunfish, 3
International 505, 3
Flying Scot
JY15
Rhodes 22
J24
Tartan 27-2
Pearson 34-2

Oddly enough, most of the boats I have had are related to each other. The Kingfisher I learned to sail on was deigned by Phillip Rhodes, as was the Rhodes 22. But it gets better! The Flying Scot was built by Gordon 'Sandy" Douglass, who was a founder of Douglas and McLeod, which became Tartan Yachts. The Tartan 27 was designed by Sparkman and Stephens, but specifically by William Shaw, who later became designer for Pearson. The J boats I had where built by Tillotson-Pearson, Everitt Pearson's subsequent company. I was very happy owning all of them, did not plan on following a family tree, but funny how things work out.

Re: What boats have you owned?

Mirror dinghy
Laser dinghy - still own
Mistral 22, “the fastest production boat in South Africa!” was the rather ambitious claim of her original builders in 1972
L26, a one-design, which was South Africa's Lipton cup class for many years.
Nimbus 28 (not the motor boat! Based on the Trapper 28) undergoing a lengthy refit in the back yard.
Pearson 26, which needs a refit
Gulfstar 41 ketch, the new addition.

I think it may be time to consolidate....
