What is it?

Hallo, fellow sailors!

We are refitting an old Jeanneau Sun Kiss. After removing some panels, we found some sticky and some very hard to describe stuff below (the black one is sticky, the whitebrown stuff kind of crumbles).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Re: What is it?

Some kind of mold??
Try spraying bleach on a small piece, if it goes away it's mold

Re: What is it?

Gonna go out on a limb here.....could it be some residue from foam overspray....I have a Beneteau, which has structural components of foam encapsulated with fiberglass.

Mold typically has a certain smell...does it pass the smell test ??

Just a wild guess...but I'm also curious about that green color.

Naa don't think so. I also don't think it's mold, it doesn't smell, and isn't mold more "flat"?

It occurs mostly where the teak is screwed to the deck.

And the green stuff is between the layers of fiberglass, but it feels sturdy.

No idea but thanks anyway.

Cheers

Interesting that it seems to be located along the thread pattern lines.

Re: What is it?

We now know why this is...
Under the glued teak was a screwed teak that wasn't sealed properly.Click image for larger version

Re: What is it?

Those are salt deposits, then? (Taste a tiny bit.) If so, will clean up with soap and fresh water.

I don't know about the green stuff, but good on you for finding out what happened, now you have to find where the water got in (usually it's far away, your deposits will be at the low spot, and the entry higher than it.)
