Sea Fever

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.
My absolute very very favorite poem!

Re: What's your boats name?

Funny, but a cultural element exists:
Americans often have kinesthetic names, feelings, dreams etc: Island Time, Happy Hours/Ours, Dreamweaver, Free Spirit etc

English often have English style location names.

South Africans amid of native names and geographic kinesthetic: Out of Africa etc

Australians have Aboriginal names and kinesthetic old white outback romance names: Gone Walkabout, Nbumanjara, Southern Cross, etc

Re: What's your boats name?

I liked the PO's name but it always seemed like someone else's boat. Eventually renamed her Soma after the wine of the Sanskrit gods, attended by all appropriate ceremonial rites.

Was going for a name both unique and easy to say over the radio.

The popped champagne cork flew up into the air, got caught in the rigging, and fell back through the companionway into the cabin, which seemed very auspicious.

Maggie & I had a Mirage 26, named "Auspicious". Difficult to pronounce, when drinking, but kept it anyway.
Next boat came with name, "Southbound". Easy to say, but confused bridge tenders (AICW). "This is the southbound sailboat, named "Southbound", requesting an opening."

When my ex-husband and I were trying to name our big house boat, he wanted to call it T-Rex (ugh) and I wanted to call it Vesilind (?sp) after a Norse mythological bird that rises from the sea, but he said no way; it would be too hard to say, "this is the Vessel Vesilind." I still like the name though

Re: What's your boats name?

Our's came with the boat also: Raincoast.

I like it because (being from the East Coast) I had never heard the word before and it seemed exotic. When I was in NY I found some crackers named "Raincoast" and I was jumping up and down in the store telling perfect strangers "This is the name of my boat!" Now I'm here in the West it's not as strange, but we'll keep it because

We've not met another boat with the same name

The transom board is enormous and expensive to replace/redo

My favorite:

Two old fishermen were talking to me and one said to the other "Oh yeah - she's on that sailboat RAINCOATS".

Very apt.

No naming seremony yet but it will be MOYA
Why, Doctor Who or Stargate would be ridiculous, Tardis might do for a loo

Re: What's your boats name?

Boat Names?

First was 'Wind Spirit', renamed 'Second Wind' ( I know now is not very original, have bumped into many ).
Renamed because the original 'Wind Spirit' was sunk, then salvaged into two seperate vessels, and it was my second boat, and a new beginning in my wife's and my lives.

Second: 'Flounder' named by my boss's daughter ( he was a co-owner ), after the fish in 'Little Mermaid'. ( It didn't jinx the boat, it is still floating, 30 years later! )

Third: 'Kemana', named by the original owner's wife who was Dutch, and grew up in Indonisia during the second world war.
'Kemana' means 'Where?' and is a common greating in Indonisia when you encounter a friend on a journey.

Other languages - Where?
Spanish: Adónde
French: où
Danish, Norwegian: Hvor
Dutch: Warr
German: Wohin
Swedish: Vart
Icelandic: Hvar
Filipino: Sann
Portuguese: para onde
French: Où
Hungarian: Ahol
Welsh: Ble
Latin: Ubi est

I am just glad part of the ceremony only calls for urine from a virgin, and does not say it has to be a human virgin. Something like a new born puppy will work.

I've had a lot of boats. I finally started using goldfish urine. (I keep it right in the bowl with the fish.)

Re: What's your boats name?

ORION....the constellation of the hunter, always my favorite constellation. I've done a lot of big game hunting so it tied right in with the other love in my life. If my beloved wife were alive when I bought this boat her name would have adorned the stern. I couldn't bear to see her name there now......

Boat's Name Is EXIT ONLY. We worked in Saudi Arabia for eleven years before we left the country on an EXIT ONLY visa. We were not planning on coming back, so we went sailing on EXIT ONLY.
