I don't think I'm missing the point, but perhaps have a different judgment of what is important. I realize that recuers can still use RDF on the old epirb once they get close, but the other major function of the epirb is broken.

If you can't afford a new epirb, you could argue that keeping the old one is better than having nothing at all, as long as you understand that there are situations where it won't work.
